Meet Our Featured Student: Brianne Stafford Brianne is a senior Geography major with a concentration in Environmental Geography. She has done a great job of becoming involved and taking advantage of opportunities to develop her leadership skills. How are you involved on campus? I am involved on campus through a multitude of organizations including National Residence Hall Honorary, and I am involved with Student Success Programs including my involvement as a Student Success Leader, as well as a Peer Mentor for the College of Arts and Sciences. What’s your favorite memory at Kent State? There are so many fantastic memories about my experiences here at Kent State. However, my favorite memory would definitely be marching in the Homecoming Parade with my hall council my freshman year. The weather was beautiful and there were so many amazing people and leaders involved! What is the most difficult thing about college, and how do you overcome that challenge? The most difficult thing about college for me was my fear in asking for help/questions. To overcome this challenge I utilized the resources offered on campus including but not limited to the free academic tutoring, the mentors, resident assistants, and the professors and faculty, all enabling me to successfully overcome my fear and seek assistance as needed. What classroom experience took you by surprise, and why? The large lecture classes caught me off guard. The large lecture courses are filled with a significant number of students, and seeking individual consultation with the professor outside of class was a must to ensure success. What’s one thing every Kent State student should experience? Every Kent State student should attend a Wagon Wheel athletic event and sit in the student section! The football games are always filled with loads of excitement, and the basketball games fill the bleachers with roaring students, faculty, and fans truly attesting the breathtaking school spirit! How has your time at Kent State helped you become the person you are today? Kent State has really helped me to develop as a leader. By taking advantage of the resources, the support, and joining a variety of different organizations, I was able to create serious leadership skills enabling me to be successful in my future. What do you hope to do long term? Ultimately, I hope to combine my education with my leadership skills to ultimately do research that will help both the environment and the people living within. What the advice would you give to other students? Take the leap. Join an organization where you do not know anyone, or take a class outside of your comfort zone that may seem intimidating. These are the leaps that will help you develop as an individual and as a leader through enabling you the ability to master skills you may never have even thought of possessing.
