I successfully graduated with an MBBS degree in Medicine from the faculty of Life Sciences, UCL. Intercalated BSc Sept 2005 - June 2006 University College London, Dept of Immunology I took an intercalated degree in Immunology and Cell Pathology as I wanted to further understand this area, and as part of this degree I undertook a research project at The Centre for Respiratory Research (UCL), supervised by Dr Jeremy Brown, and entitled ‘Binding of Complement Factors to Different M Protein Serotypes of Streptococcus pyogenes’. Results presented in my thesis were published in the Journal of Immunology. I was awarded a First Class Degree, graduating 2nd in my class. Sept 2009 Ø Paediatric Case Presentation, Barnet District Hospital: Transposition of the Great Arteries Nov 2006 Ø Junior Clinical Case Presentation, The Whittington Hospital: July 2006 Ø Medical Grand Round, University College Hospital: All a puff of smoke? (Moyamoya Disease) Research • I completed a BSc research project during Intercalated BSc at UCL as detailed above. This gave me useful experience in the collection of quantitative data, the design and optimisation of lab experiments and data analysis using statistics and computers. I have also successfully completed my PhD in Immunology and Cell Pathology for the Division of Medicine, UCL. Lab Techniques • I have gained experienced at Western Blotting, FACS Analysis, Insertion-Duplication Mutagenesis, Electron Microscopy, Confocal Microscopy, Cell Culture and basic Microbiological Techniques. IT • I am fully competent with Microsoft Office, wireless networking, statistics packages and using powerpoint for presentations. I am also literate at webpage design, and other graphic packages. Teaching Throughout my PhD I have taught summer students, BSc students, PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and clinical fellows. I have worked on international research collaborations and taught research techniques to students from universities in the UK and USA. During my FY1 year I have organized, co-ordinated and participated in the hospital classroom and bedside teaching program for the final year medical students, aimed at preparing students for final year examinations. Additionally, I have also organised and run Mock OSCE examinations for medical students across both Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital sites as well as establishing and running a weekend Finals Revision Course utilizing an audience response system. I have also been fortunate enough to tutor multiple students through A-level examinations. Furthermore I have had the opportunity to assist teaching on the Medipaces Course for MRCP Part II and also have taught horse riding to multiple students of varying abilities. Interests I am an enthusiastic sportswoman (horse riding, ice hockey, scuba diving and represented my County at Cross Country Running). I was treasurer of the ULU Ice Hockey Club and have set up and am Treasurer of the UCL Union Ice Skating and Ice Hockey Club, and was awarded Full Honorary Colours in 2008 from UCL. I also hold a PADI Rescue Diver license and have recently completed Nitrox Scuba Diving Training with SNSI. I have traveled extensively, lived in America for 2 years and enjoy art, reading and playing the double bass. CATHERINE HYAMS Page 6 of 6
