North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities F2 Medical Microbiology Microbiology A varied clinical post offering good insight into microbiology with additional opportunities to experience HIV medicine and ITU The microbiology component is mostly desk based. The F2 receives clinical calls from other health professionals and liaises between laboratory and clinicians. They are supervised at all times, usually by part-time registrar but there is direct access to consultant also. They also review patients on the ward and attend daily ward rounds on ITU. The post also involves medical record keeping, preparing hand-over and educational meetings. There is also the expectation for the F2 to conduct an audit. Other opportunities available to the F2 The microbiology team work closely with the HIV team and it is possible to negotiate attending HIV clinic and ward rounds. It is also possible to arrange to review newly admitted patients under the HIV team. Most F2s are regularly involved with the HIV team. Reviewing acute patients with Infectious Diseases Registrar who accepts referrals from the rest of the hospital. This is useful for completing WBA Spending time on ITU which is especially useful for completing DOPS Expected learning outcomes Take a history and examine a patient Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients Educate patients effectively Location Microbiology department Supervisor(s) Mr Soleimanian (Educational Supervisor) Main duties Holding the microbiology bleep and receiving clinical calls from other health of the professionals placement Attending daily bench rounds in the laboratory and liaising between laboratory and clinicians Attending daily consultant led ITU-Microbiology ward rounds Reviewing patients on the ward usually with support from a senior but sometimes independently with advice Keeping a detailed patient list to record the advice given by the microbiology team Organising handovers and keeping records Organising weekly departmental educational meeting with the support of the registrar Preparing cases for weekly educational meeting between microbiology and HIV teams Conducting an audit Opportunity to contribute to grand round presentations Typical This is an un-banded post and typical hours are 0900 – 1700. The mornings consist of working bench rounds, educational meetings, taking clinical calls and following up on blood culture pattern in results. The afternoons involve ITU ward round and reviewing patients on the ward. When this the registrar is available the F2 is able to attend activities with HIV and ITU teams. placement Meeting Schedule Mon: handover from on call Consultant to new consultant for the week Tues: Departmental educational meeting.
