This document contains three General Surgery placement descriptions: North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - East and North Herts NHS Trust Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities F1 General Surgery – Colorectal General Surgery Managing patients under a large colorectal team consisting of 3 consultants. Exposure to elective open and laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Exposure to a wide range of emergency general surgery pathology (open + lap), requiring pre and post-operative management. Average of 9 theatre sessions, 6 clinics and 2 endoscopy sessions per week to assist with when appropriate Daily ward rounds. Pre-op assessment clinic. Venepuncture, arterial blood gas sampling, cannulas, urinary catheters, NG tube insertion On call – general and vascular surgery. Management of acute admissions and patients undergoing emergency surgery. Education and Training Weekly surgical and medical grand round lectures, theatres (surgical skills), clinics, audit, monthly M+M presentations, weekly colorectal MDT meetings. Exposure to a wide range of emergency general surgery pathology (open + lap), requiring pre and post-operative management. Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities F1 General Surgery - Vascular General Surgery Exposure to a broad range of vascular surgery pathology (including renal access, carotid surgery, aortic, upper and lower limb open/endovascular procedures, amputations). Working with 4 vascular consultants. Managing elective and emergency vascular patients. Patient review pre/ post-surgery /angiography. Undertaking ABPIs. Daily ward rounds (mix of solo / SpR/ Consultant led) On average 10 lists and 4 clinics per week to assist with when appropriate. Pre-op assessment clinic Venepuncture, arterial blood gas sampling, cannulas, urinary catheters. On call – general and vascular surgery.
