Faculty input regarding the potential for elimination, consolidation, continuation or enhancement
of the following programs was requested by Jim Carroll, I-IVP and AVP of Research (Memo,
08/31/2011): MA State and Local History and MLS Social Science and American Culture.
MA State and Local History
The History graduate committee voted to phase out this MA, effective Winter 2012. Phase out
form with faculty votes and dept head signature is enclosed with this memo.
MLS Social Science and American Culture
The History section voted to charge the graduate committee with converting the MLS in Social
Science and American Culture into MA in American Studies. For: 15 Against: 0 Abstention: 0
(History Section Meeting, April 8, 2011). Phase out form with faculty votes and dept head
signature is enclosed with this memo.
The current enrollment in the MLS stands at 12 students, and unfailingly attracts 4-5 new
students each year. The History section does not want to lose these graduate students over the
next 2 years while developing a new program to replace the MLS. Hence we will continue to
admit and graduate students from this program until fall of 2012, when it will be replaced by the
new American Studies program.
Timeline
During Fall/Winter 2011-12: the MLS will continue while faculty develop the new program. (New

call, September 2011).
During Fall/Winter 2012/13: Continue the MLS and submit proposal through input system seeking
approval for new program in American Studies.
Fall 2013: End MLS; replace with new program in American Studies.
