EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DIVISION OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS TYPE OF REVISION: (CHECK ALL THAT APPLY.) Course Number/Subject Code xx Course Title REQUEST FOR COURSE REVISIONS Credit Hours xx DEPARTMENT: COMMUNICATION AND THEATRE ARTS DEPARTMENT CONTACT: MICHAEL TEW Course Description Prerequisite/Corequisite Restriction COLLEGE: ARTS AND SCIENCES PHONE: 487-0388 CONTACT EMAIL: MTEW@EMICH.EDU DIRECTIONS: COMPLETE SECTION A AND SECTIONS B1a, B2a, B3a B4a, B9, B10 AND B11. COMPLETE ONLY THE REMAINING PARTS OF SECTION B THAT CONCERN THE REVISIONS CHECKED ABOVE. FOR ASSISTANCE CONTACT THE COURSE AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT OFFICE. A. Rationale for Revision: The current course title and description for CTAC 124 do not reflect current content and practice in the course. Primarily, the description is inaccurate since it was originally written as an extension of CTAS 121 – a course no longer offered by the University. Additionally, the course title and description need to be adjusted as the result of content changes associated with assessment of the course (program review and General Education projects). The original description and title apply to only a few of the student learning outcomes and content features of the course. Course assessment resulted in a change in course outcomes which now include the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The Student is able to communicate oral messages intended for public audience The Student is able to analyze oral messages presented to public audiences by others The Student is able to craft oral arguments intended for public audiences The Student is able to manage communication apprehension as related to the presentation of oral messages to public audiences The Student is able to articulate the relationship between public oral communication and democratic life in historical and contemporary contexts The Student is able to demonstrate the principles of ethical oral public communication The current course title alludes to only three of the course outcomes (1, 3 and 4). The current course description does not appropriately suggest any of the course outcomes (as previously indicated, the description is inaccurate). Both the course title and the current description suggest a course limited to the development of a single behavioral skill whereas actual practice and approved course outcomes suggest content and learning at cognitive, behavioral, and affective levels. The proposed course title and description are reflective of the content and intentions of the course and are still consistent with the overall Communication curriculum and the role the course serves in the General Education program. Additionally, the inclusion of the term communication in the course title and description better links this basic course to disciplinary practice at both the institutional and professional organizational levels.
