Rationale for Revision: GEOG 678, Advanced GIS Applications, is being redesigned to cater to students who need advanced knowledge and skills in desktop GIS programming and customization. The course title is also being changed to Advanced Desktop Programming for GIS Customization to reflect this new focus. GEOG 584 is now being taught as the introductory programming class in GIS that all graduate students in GIS are expected to take. GEOG 678, on the other hand, deals with advanced concepts and techniques for customizing GIS software. Topics covered include reading and understanding programming code, writing reusable code for typical GIS programming tasks, advanced Graphical User Interface design, building GIS applications that range from moderate to advanced levels of complexity, the Systems Development Life Cycle, and packaging and deployment of customized software.
