Program Revision Guidelines EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DIVISION OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS OUTLINE FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS TO REVISE PROGRAMS Use this outline to prepare proposals to revise existing programs, including undergraduate majors and minors and graduate degree programs and certificates. Proposals for revising programs should be submitted in narrative form, using the following outline. Guidelines are on the following page. PROGRAM NAME AND SUBJECT CODE: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MATHEMATICS FOR ELEMENTARY TEACHING MINOR (MTHE) REVISED PROGRAM NAME AND SUBJECT CODE (IF APPLICABLE): ELEMENTARY EDUCATION MATHEMATICS MINOR (MTHE) DEGREE: DEPARTMENT(S)/SCHOOL(S): CONTACT PERSON: MATHEMATICS CARLA TAYEH COLLEGE(S): CONTACT PHONE: ARTS AND SCIENCE 487-1444 CONTACT EMAIL: REQUESTED START DATE: TERM FALL YEAR CTAYEH@EMICH.EDU 2012 I. Rationale This revision is to align the catalog with current advising practice in the elementary education mathematics minor. We routinely allow students to take MATH 107 Plane Trigonometry as an elective in this program. In this proposal, we are adding MATH 107 to the list of restricted electives. We also would like to remove the words “Or other mathematics courses as approved by the advising coordinator for elementary mathematics education.” These words are unnecessary, as students in any program can ask for a substitution, and the proposed list of restricted electives covers virtually every case already. The change in program name is to correct a mistake that occurred when the program name was changed from the old name (up to and including the 2009-11 catalog) “Mathematics Minor for the Elementary Teaching Certificate.” Program names for all secondary and elementary programs were changed in order to achieve consistency and ease of use in the catalog. The name “Mathematics Major for the Elementary Teaching Certificate” was changed to “Elementary Education Mathematics Major”, and the name for the minor should be similar.
