A. Rationale/Justification for the Course
This course has been offered for several semesters as a ‘special topics’ PEGN 177 course.
The PEGN Activity and Wellness courses fulfill the Learning Beyond the Classroom – “Self and Well Being” area of
the General Education Program. They are designed with the intent to provide students’ advanced concepts associated
with enhancing individual fitness, health, and well-being. Engaging in these personal behaviors enable students to make
positive lifestyle changes and increase their frequency of regular physical activity. These attributes can ultimately offer
students an opportunity to develop lifelong fitness, stress management, and greater opportunities to socialize
throughout the lifespan.

addition, those with a career interest in health and well-being will have the opportunity to enhance and refine those
professional skills necessary within the water saftey discipline.
Course Description:
This course introduces knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content
and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent
drowning and injuries.
Course Purpose:
To teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course
content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent
drowning and injuries.
Course Objectives:
Students will identify behaviors of a swimmer, distressed swimmer and an active or passive drowning victim.
Students will describe the components of an emergency action plan and how to activate it.
Students will describe the general procedures for an emergency occurring in the water or on land.
Students will demonstrate how to perform equipment-based rescues.
Students will learn how to provide first aid and how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies.
Students will learn how to recognize and care for possible head, neck or back injuries.

Daily Engagement
Attendance at each class meeting and active engagement with learning experiences are expected. Attendance will
be taken each day.
Any combination of 2 tardies or leaving early equates to 1 absence.
To receive daily engagement points you must be in class, present a medical excuse or schedule of your university
sponsored activity (e.g. artistic performance, debate/athletic team). Otherwise, participation points will either be
deducted or will not be earned.
