A. Rationale/Justification for the Course
Transgenre: Genre, Gender, and Sex (A Queer Poetics) aims to offer students of Women’s Studies, Queer Studies, and
Creative Writing an opportunity to work at the intersections of genre / gender / sex and experimental writing. The
course was developed through the Faculty Development Center’s seminar on curriculum planning for the WGST
minor, and is cross-listed in the Creative Program as CRTW 335.

WGST 380 provides an introduction to the relation between literary genre theory and social systems of gender, sex and
race through a rigorous investigation of “transgenre” literary texts (forms that transgress genre conventions) across
periods and cultures In addition, the course offers a creative writing workshop with an emphasis on the transgenre
themes and forms.
