I. Rationale
After becoming a department, the WGST program held a Curriculum mini conference
to review the program in light of recent trends and advances in national women's and gender
studies scholarship. The President of the National Women's Studies Association attended the
conference and consulted with the department after full roundtable discussions on key points
of the curriculum. Three core programming needs/areas of emphasis were identified at the
conference and are addressed in this program revision: transnational feminism, gender and
sexuality studies, and feminist methods and epistemology. The resulting curricular
renovations are reflected in the new courses included in the minor as Restricted Electives,
including: Feminist Inquiry, Women's Studies Abroad, and Gender in a Transnational World.
The first new faculty member hired fully into the Department of WGST designed a
new minor in Queer Studies. Several courses were developed in a seminar by faculty across
campus, along with a core requirement WGST 305 Queer Studies, which will be taught by
WGST faculty. The revised minor includes Queer Studies as a Restricted Elective option.
