Program Revision Guidelines EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DIVISION OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS OUTLINE FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS TO REVISE PROGRAMS Use this outline to prepare proposals to revise existing programs, including undergraduate majors and minors and graduate degree programs and certificates. Proposals for revising programs should be submitted in narrative form, using the following outline. Guidelines are on the following page. PROGRAM NAME AND SUBJECT CODE: MAJOR IN WOMEN'S AND GENDER STUDIES REVISED PROGRAM NAME AND SUBJECT CODE (IF APPLICABLE):MAJOR IN WOMEN'S AND GENDER STUDIES DEGREE: UNDERGRADUATE DEPARTMENT(S)/SCHOOL(S): WOMEN'S AND GENDER STUDIES COLLEGE(S): CAS CONTACT PERSON: DEANNA MIHALY CONTACT PHONE:(734) 330-9614 CONTACT EMAIL:DMIHALY@EMICH.EDU REQUESTED START DATE: TERM FALLYEAR2012 I. Rationale After becoming a department, the WGST program held a Curriculum mini conference to review the program in light of recent trends and advances in national women's and gender studies scholarship. The President of the National Women's Studies Association attended the conference and consulted with the department after full roundtable discussions on key points of the curriculum. Three core programming needs/areas of emphasis were identified at the conference and are addressed in this program revision: transnational feminism, gender and sexuality studies, and feminist methods and epistemology. The first new faculty member hired fully into the Department of WGST designed a new minor in Queer Studies. Several courses were developed in a seminar by faculty across campus, along with a core requirement WGST 305 Queer Studies, which will be taught by WGST faculty. The revised major and minor include these new courses as Restricted Electives. The most recent Assessment report made it apparent that the inability to gather consistent student learning outcome data across the program revealed a lack of coherence in the major. It is currently widely dispersed across campus, with few options for WGST majors to attend class as a discrete group. The addition of a core WGST 300 level course, Feminist Miller, Program Revision Guidelines Sept. 09 Program Revision Guidelines Inquiry, will facilitate student learning in developmental stages. It will also allow majors to identify each other earlier in their program of study, which will be helpful for student engagement and retention. The stricter requirement of 15 credit hours at the 300 level or above is more in line with other majors across campus, in which at least half the content in the program involving in-depth study within the field. WGST students will be better prepared for graduate study and careers. II. Description of Current Program Major in Women’s and Gender Studies I. Impact The changes to the program reflect curricular developments in response to faculty and lecturer additions. There is a need for additional faculty to teach core courses in the curriculum on a regular rotation. The proposed changes to the program limit the teaching load options of faculty whose tenure lines are housed in WGST, but the existing faculty in the department are able to cover the proposed courses in the revised major.
