I. Rationale
After becoming a department, the WGST program held a Curriculum mini conference
to review the program in light of recent trends and advances in national women's and gender
studies scholarship. The President of the National Women's Studies Association attended the
conference and consulted with the department after full roundtable discussions on key points
of the curriculum. Three core programming needs/areas of emphasis were identified at the
conference and are addressed in this program revision: transnational feminism, gender and
sexuality studies, and feminist methods and epistemology.
The first new faculty member hired fully into the Department of WGST designed a
new minor in Queer Studies. Several courses were developed in a seminar by faculty across
campus, along with a core requirement WGST 305 Queer Studies, which will be taught by
WGST faculty. The revised major and minor include these new courses as Restricted
Electives.
The most recent Assessment report made it apparent that the inability to gather
consistent student learning outcome data across the program revealed a lack of coherence in
the major. It is currently widely dispersed across campus, with few options for WGST majors
to attend class as a discrete group. The addition of a core WGST 300 level course, Feminist

Inquiry, will facilitate student learning in developmental stages. It will also allow majors to
identify each other earlier in their program of study, which will be helpful for student
engagement and retention.
The stricter requirement of 15 credit hours at the 300 level or above is more in line
with other majors across campus, in which at least half the content in the program involving
in-depth study within the field. WGST students will be better prepared for graduate study and
careers.

IV. Impact
The changes to the program reflect curricular developments in response to faculty and
lecturer additions. There is a need for additional faculty to teach core courses in the
curriculum on a regular rotation. The proposed changes to the program limit the teaching
load options of faculty whose tenure lines are housed in WGST, but the existing faculty in
the department are able to cover the proposed courses in the revised major.
