Eastern Michigan University College of Arts and Sciences College Advisory Committee – Science Subcommittee Thursday January 22, 2015 at 3:30 PM 545 MJ Science Complex ----- Minutes ---Members in attendance: A. Johnson (CHEM), T. Kovacs (G&G), D. Jacobs (PHY), P. Moore (Computer Sci.), M. Angell (BIO), M. Laporte (Dean’s office) Approval of Minutes from the December 11, 2014 meeting Motion to approve minutes by P. Moore, 2nd by D. Jacobs – Vote: 4 for, 0 against, 1 abstain 0 Old Business Motion to approve the Neuroscience (NSCI) program and associated courses with the comment that, in NSCI 301, the students who plan on going to graduate school are advised that many graduate programs in Neuroscience require a year of physics - D. Jacobs, 2nd by P. Moore – Vote: 5 for, 0 against Motion to not approve SWRK 422, 454 and 473 (D. Jacobs, 2nd by P. Moore) – Vote: 5 for, 0 against Rationale: Despite being 400-level courses, all three courses have no prerequisites. In addition, new 400-level courses cannot be added for graduate credit. These courses appear to provide only 12 hours of instruction for the 2 credit hours awarded, which is half of that required under university policy. The method of content delivery for SWRK 473 also is not clear. Motion to approve THRC 280 – P. Moore, 2nd by T. Kovacs - Vote: 5 for, 0 against Motion to approve MET 450 & MET 455 with the comment that no goals and objectives were provided for MET 450 – M. Angell, 2nd by D. Jacobs - Vote 5 for, 0 against New Business Motion to approve CHEM 111 & CHEM 116 – M. Angell, 2nd by T. Kovacs – Vote: 5 for, 0 against Motion to approve CHEM 533, 553, 563, 620 and 690 with the following comments – M. Angell, 2nd by P. Moore – Vote: 5 for, 0 against 1. Although part of the same program, CHEM 533, 553, 563,620 have inconsistent course-grade scales which vary by as much as 10% between comparable grading levels (i.e. 60%=C for 533 and 70%=C for 620) 2. CHEM 563 does not have a recorded vote on the submitted form 3. CHEM 620 does not report course goals and objectives in the filed paperwork Motion to table CHEM 630 to facilitate discussion between ESL and Chemistry departments – D. Jacobs, 2nd by T. Kovacs – Vote: 5 for, 0 against – Discussion to center on the nature of the course syllabus. Motion to table MS in Chemistry to allow for resolution of the CHEM 630 discussion with ESL. In addition, the committee feels the admissions requirements for Chemistry M.S. program should include a year of calculusbased physics and a year of calculus – M. Angell, 2nd by D. Jacobs – Vote: 5 for, 0 against Motion to approve ESSC 202 revision with the comment that the CAC-sciences committee strongly recommends elementary education majors have at least one course in Chemistry – P. Moore, 2nd by D. Jacobs Vote: 3 for, 1 against, 1 abstain Moves to table BS in Geospatial Information Science and Technology program proposal pending clarification on the identical use of the name “Environmental Geoscience” for a concentration in the proposed program as well as in an existing emphasis in the Environmental Science concentration for IESS. In addition, 4 out of 5 concentrations in the proposal require a 400 level elective course while only one such course is offered in each concentration. This could create significant bottlenecks – M. Angell, 2nd P. Moore - Vote: 5 for, 0 against Motion to approve PHY 100 contingent on the removal of the restriction of the course to COE - D. Jacobs, 2nd by P. Moore – Vote: 5 for, 0 against Motion to table rest of agenda as delineated below for time – P. Moore 2nd by D. Jacobs – Vote: 5 for, 0 against Since the CHHS files listed below were not provided to CAC_S in a timely fashion for review in January and since CAC_S does not meet in March, in order to best assess and evaluate the extensive proposals from CHHS listed below, a review date extension is requested until April 17, 2015.
