CAS Science Subcommittee Meeting February 3, 2011, 3:30 pm 521 Mark Jefferson Minutes Present: Knapp (Psych), Korta (Bio), Blair (Math), Haynes (COSC), Clark (G&G), Behringer (P&A), Emal (Chem), Tornquist (Dean's Office), Nord (DH-Chem) Guest: Liza Cerroni-Long (Anthropology), I. Call to order 3:32 by John Knapp, Chair. II. Minutes of January 6, 2011, (motion by Clark, Emal) approved unanimously. III. New Business College of Arts and Sciences Liza Cerroni-Long, (SAC) gave a précis of proposed new Graduate Certificate program and related new courses. Program is interdisciplinary currently, primarily between Anthropology section and Historic Preservation section (G&G). It has been in development for 2 years. A. ANTH 430/530 Museum Anthropology, New Courses Discussion: • As there are significant different expectations for undergrad versus grad course, would it not be better to have two different forms? • Discussion of prerequisites for 430 versus for 530. We note that with no prerequisites, undergraduate students could take the 430 (i.e., a capstone class) before taking any foundation class. Lack of prerequisite for the 530 class is not viewed as a problem because the students enrolling in that class are graduate students (and hence possess an implied level of maturity or knowledge content). Suggestion/Comment: • In the course (430/530) proposal, it is unclear what the grading scale is. We suggest spelling out ranges of points so as to remove ambiguity. Also, the syllabus should be clarified for graduate students -- there is no D grade possible. • We recommend that there be some prerequisite on ANTH 430 in order to aid advising, student expectation, and instructor expectation. For example, a required class level of junior or above, or ANTH 135, or department permission. This will clarify the expectation that ANTH 430 is a capstone course and not a foundation course. • We suggest splitting the two courses, 430 and 530, into two forms for convenience of SAC department and Registration (Banner); CAC-Sciences does not need to review this future bureaucratic convenience. Proposers should discuss this with Rhonda Longworth and Diane Winder. B. Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies Discussion: • Do you intend to allow students in the graduate certificate program to take 430 instead of 530? If not, then the program should not allow 430 (ANTH 430/530 is currently listed as a required course). • We note that a student in this certificate program could take only one class in Anthropology (ANTH 530) and the rest of the classes in G&G. • What is the MSST prefix? Answer: The MSST prefix does not yet exist. The proposers intend to create an MSST prefix for this program to encourage future cross-listing. Motion (Haynes, Clark) to accept two course proposals (ANTH 430, ANTH 530) and new graduate certificate program in Museum Studies as a package with above comment passes unanimously. IV. Meeting adjourned 4:16pm Repectfully submitted, Susan Makrouhee Haynes, secretary
