Present: Knapp (Psych), Blair (Math), Haynes (COSC), Clark (G&G), Behringer
(P&A), Emal (Chem).
I. Call to order 3:31 pm by Chair John Knapp
II. Minutes of April 7, 2011
Corrections: change year of meeting to 2011 and time of adjournment to 5:25pm.
Motion (Haynes, Clark) to approve with corrections passes unanimously.
III. Old Business
A. College of Technology, School of Engineering Technology
1. CET 251 Engineering Software Applications, Course Revision
Motion (Haynes, Behringer) to table for further information from school regarding
inconsistencies in title, in course description and in change to prerequisites.
2. M.S. in Computer Aided Engineering Courses included in the Program
Revision
We note the following general concerns on course proposals:
(1) The proposers have neglected to indicate restricted electives by checking
the correct box on the form -- this added considerable time to our discussion.
(2) How can so many of these courses have no prerequisites when the
course content clearly requires science and mathematics background. What are the
students like? Are there admission requirements that would satisfy necessary
science and mathematics foundational knowledge before taking courses in the
program?
a. CAE 675 CAE Capstone, Course Revision
Comment: Current catalog description has error.
Motion (Haynes, Blair) to approve with comment passes unanimously.
b. Courses, set #1
CAE 586 – Computational Flow Simulation (new course)
REE 576 – Biomass (new course)
REE 577 – Geothermal Engineering (new course)
REE578 – Fuel Cell Applications and Design (new course)
REE 588 – Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (new course)
Motion (Emal, Haynes) to table for review by CAS departments that may
have conflict with course content. Motion passes unanimously.
c. Courses, set #2
REE 571 – Thermal Systems Design (new course)
REE 572 – Solar Electric System (new course)
REE 573 – Wind Turbine Design, Construction and Testing (new
course)
REE 579 – Energy System Control (new course)
REE 583 – Advanced Wind Turbine Design Analysis (new course)
REE 589 – Renewable Energy Projects (new course)
Surprisingly, these new course proposals (identified as project courses with
approximately 50% of the evaluation based on projects and assignments)
provided little to no information on sample projects and assignments.
Motion to table (Clark, Blair) for more information from the school on
sample projects and assignments. The motion passes unanimously.
d. CAE 552 – Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing for
Engineering Design (new course)
Comments:
(1) We note that QUAL 553 is being removed from the program and
replaced with CAE 552. Both courses are in the School of Engineering
Technology and have very similar names.
(2) The proposer did not check the box that indicates the new course
is replacing an existing course: this added considerable time to our
discussion.
(3) CAE 552 will be a restricted elective in thesis and renewable
tracks: error in form.
Motion (Haynes, Clark) to approve with comments passes unanimously.
e. MS Computer Aided Engineering, Program Revision
Comments and Concerns:
(1) We note with surprise and dismay that 13 courses will be taught by only
two faculty members.
(2) We note there are no prerequisites for many courses requiring
significant science and/or mathematics sophistication (mentioned above).
What are the requirements for admission? Will the student population be
prepared to handle this content?
(3) We have a concern with the uncomfortable "fit" of renewable energy in
a CAE program. Proposers actually refer to REE energy courses as
belonging to a renewable energy academic program, not a CAE program.
Prospective students interested in a "renewable energy academic program"
will not look for it in CAE programs. In the rationale, other renewable
energy programs (mentioned for comparison/benchmarking to the proposed
EMU program) have nothing to do with CAE
(4) From the rationale given by the proposers, this program is much more
about renewable energy than about CAE.
(5) Design & Analysis Track has a lot of Renewable Energy listed in matrix
of courses, but not given in text of proposal. The new course proposals in
REE are not indicated as being used for other tracks in CAE program.
(6) Our concerns on several of the courses proposed for this program
(above), have increased our concern regarding this program.
Motion (Clark, Haynes) to not approve the program passes unanimously.
B. College of Technology, School of Technology Studies
TEDU 118 Energy and Transportation Technology Course Revision
Note: Course syllabus says exams are online, but the online box is not checked.
Motion (Clark, Behringer) to table because issues from previous discussion (April
meeting) not clarified. Motion passes unanimously.
IV. New Business
A. College of Arts and Sciences
1. CHEM New Courses:
CHEM 520 Advanced Methodology for Secondary Chemistry Teachers New
Course
Comments:
(1) Catalog description says 3hr lecture + 3hr laboratory, but syllabus is 2 + 3.
(2) Syllabus allows for D grade.
(3) Inconsistent on who can enroll: in one place it says only chemistry education
students (others may not enroll), but elsewhere it says the course is (also) for
physics students.
(4) Syllabus restricts written assignments to MS Word 2003 or 2007. This will need
updating.
CHEM 525 Modern Chemistry for Educators I New Course
Comment:
(1) Syllabus allows for D grade.
CHEM 526 Modern Chemistry for Educators II New Course
Comments:
(1) Syllabus allows for D grade.
(2) Since CHEM 525 is a prerequisite, other explicitly stated prerequisites are
redundant.
Motion (Haynes, Clark) to accept three Chemistry courses with comments. Motion
passes unanimously.
2. Chemistry - Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) - Secondary Chemistry
Concentration Program Revision
Chemistry representative, Dr Emal, handed out a correction sheet for the MAT.
Comments:
(1) CHEM 520 should be in professional studies program -- it should not count to
the Chemistry side of the MAT.
(2) Credits don't add up.
(3) Sequence chart is messed up (here, we are referring to the original).
Motion to table for clarification (Haynes, Behringer) passes unanimously.
We are willing to do an email review and vote.
3. Geography and Geology - Master of Arts in Teaching - Earth Science
Concentration Program Revision
Motion (Haynes, Blair) to accept passes unanimously.
B. College of Health and Human Services, School of Health Sciences
1. CLRA 575 Ethical Issues in Clinical Research New Course
Comments:
(1) Proposers do not specify whether this is a required or restricted elective.
(2) Title in cover letter is different from title on proposal.
(3) If this course will be required in a program, a program revision proposal will be
necessary.
Motion (Clark, Emal) to accept with comment passes unanimously.
2. HLAD Courses:
HLAD 402 Health Policy New Course
HLAD 419 Legal and Regulatory Issues in Health Care New Course
Motion (Emal, Haynes) to table HLAD 402, HLAD 419 pending information from
the proposers: the catalog descriptions are exactly the same. The motion passes
unanimously.
C. College of Education
COUN 692 Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in College Counseling
Course Revision
Master of Arts in College Counseling Program Revision
BMMT 360 Methods of Teaching General Business and Office Education New
Course
Motion (Haynes, Clark) to table two courses and graduate program revision due to
insufficient time. Motion passes unanimously.
D. College of Technology
1. IDE 430 Writing for Interior Design New Course
Motion (Emal, Clark) to send to Arts committee passes unanimously.
2. MFG courses
MFG 203 Industrial Operations Course Revision
MFG 311 Engineering Intellectual Property Course Revision
MFG 327 Engineering Project Management Course Revision
MFG 450 Lean Enterprise Course Revision
MFG 470 Integrated Product and Process Design Course Revision
Comments:
(1) Who is going to be allowed to register is not checked.
(2) Perhaps MFG 450 and MFG 470 should be more restrictive as to who they let
in, e.g, just juniors and seniors.
Motion (Clark, Haynes) to approve with comments passes unanimously.
3. TEDU 104 Modeling, Automation, and Energy New Course
Comments:
(1) Incorrectly checked as available to graduate students.
(2) This course will replace TEDU 103, but school is offering TEDU 103 all the
way through FALL 2012. TEDU 104 will be a summer term course, but TEDU 103
is offered the following fall. We find this confusing and counter-productive.
(3) What is the PLTW seminary? What students are required to attend?
(4) If TEDU 104 will be required on a program, a program revision proposal will be
necessary.
Motion (Clark, Blair ) to accept with comment passes (4 - 0 - 1) (aye - nay abstain)
4. TS 508 Contemporary Trends in Technology and Society Course Revision
Motion (Emal, Clark) to approve passes unanimously
V. Open discussion
Suggestion to invite Rhonda Longworth to June meeting to give her a better
understanding of what our work entails.
