HROD professionals are charged with building, maintaining or changing
unique organizational cultures. Tools to accomplish this successfully
include change management skills, recruiting, and selection, as well as
training, development and compensation policies/practices. Organizational
culture reflects the shared customs, practices, rituals and values of
organization members which facilitate desired strategic goal achievement.
According to Lei, Slater and Slocum (1990), these shared values and
practices provide “tacit mental and emotional guidelines” followed by
managers and employees in pursuing goals and serve as the “foundation” of
how people within the organization relate to each other to create a “unique
sense of identity” that differentiates the organization from its competitors.
Many people would recognize this as “the way we do things around here.”
What happens to organizational culture, however, when HROD
professionals must address a “here” that is “anywhere or everywhere on the
globe”? Suddenly the shared values and implicit guidelines for the
organizational culture become blurred. Certainly issues regarding cultural
expectations and differences abound in such an environment. In addition,
the traditional policies and practices used are affected by the differences in
cultural values and communication norms across countries. For example,
Professor Erin Meyer at INSEAD highlights the differences in providing
individual performance feedback in Europe/Russia when compared to the
U.S. Europeans/Russians tend to provide implicit positive feedback but
direct negative feedback, whereas U.S. managers combine the two, reducing
the impact of negative feedback by first providing explicit positive feedback,
followed by the negative comments. The differences don’t stop there. Many
Asian cultures prefer group to individual feedback. How can HROD
professionals create, maintain or change organizational culture where the
tools used to reinforce the culture must differ to ensure that each individual
is able to understand the same expectations?
Lei et al. offer three key approaches to help instill and maintain the
desired organizational culture across international boundaries. Ensure that
shared values are
- simple, clear and identifiable across cultures, conveying the same explicit
meaning, ideas and sense of purpose regarding commitment to a unifying
ideal that differentiates the organization from its competitors.
- consistent over time, reinforcing guiding principles which employees
everywhere can embrace and execute.
- disseminated throughout all parts of organizations over time, leading to a
shared ethos and code regardless of cultural or communication differences.

MSHROD Alumni Interview: Elizabeth Dudek
By: Dr. Eric Schulz
The subject of the MSHROD alumni interview for this edition of the MSHROD newsletter is
Elizabeth Dudek. Ms. Dudek serves as a Benefits Administrator at Hospice of Michigan. Ms.
Dudek is a 2013 graduate of the Eastern Michigan MSHROD program. She received her B.A. in
Communication from the University of Michigan at Dearborn. In her capacity as a Benefits
Administrator, Ms. Dudek is responsible for administering all statewide benefit plans for
employees of Hospice of Michigan. Ms. Dudek is also responsible for ensuring that Hospice of
Michigan continues to be in compliance with the new Affordable Care Act legislation.

Ms. Dudek chose to enroll in the MSHROD program because of its greater concentration on
business compared to other Human Resource graduate programs that she had explored. While a
student in the MSHROD program, Ms. Dudek particularly appreciated the courses in Benefits
Administration with Dr. Eric Schulz and Training and Development with Dr. Nick Blanchard.
As Ms. Dudek’s first class in the MSHROD program, the benefits administration course helped
set the tone for the entire MSHROD program for her. The training course was of assistance to
Ms. Dudek because her involvement in the semester-long training project at Eastern Michigan
helped her prepare for any training program in the field from start to finish.
Advice that Ms. Dudek conveys to current students of the MSHROD program is to network as
much as possible. Ms. Dudek believes networking provides a great avenue for graduate students
and professionals to converse about human resource and organizational development issues they
face at work. An additional area of advice Ms. Dudek offers is to never pass up an opportunity
to interview. Being a good job interviewee, according to Ms. Dudek, is a great skill that
continually requires practice and preparation.
