MSHRODAlumniInterview:SarahHarper
By:Dr.EricSchulz
The subject of the MSHROD alumni interview for this edition of the MSHROD
newsletter is Sarah Harper. Ms. Harper serves as a Human Resource Manager for Systems In
Motion, which is a rapidly growing IT firm of about 250 employees that is pioneering the
concept of “Onshoring”, a cost-efficient service delivery model that creates a globally
competitive IT Operation while retaining 100% of the talent in the US. Systems In Motion is
located in Michigan with an additional office in California. Ms. Harper is a 2010 graduate of the
Eastern Michigan MSHROD program. She also received her B.B.A. in 2007 from Eastern
Michigan in Management, with a concentration in human resources. In her capacity as a Human
Resource Manager, Ms. Harper is responsible for leading both the HR and Operations teams.
She oversees a wide spectrum of human resource activities including employee relations,
benefits administration, and the HRIS function. While serving in the role of the HR Manager,
Ms. Harper has overseen the implementation of both an HRIS system and flexible spending
account. Ms. Harper began work for Systems In Motion in November 2010 and assumed her
current position as an HR Manager in March 2013. Prior to becoming the Human Resource
Manager for Systems In Motion, Ms. Harper also was employed there as a Recruiting
Coordinator, HR Generalist and Senior HR Generalist. In addition to her employment at
Systems In Motion, Ms. Harper has also worked at NSF International where she was employed
as both an Administrative Coordinator and HR Assistant. Ms. Harper has also worked at PDS
Services, a staffing company as an HR Assistant prior to joining to Systems In Motion.
Ms. Harper chose to enroll in the MSHROD program because of her interest in pursuing
a career in human resources. She became aware of the MSHROD program through her
undergraduate degree in Management at Eastern Michigan. Ms. Harper initially entered the
MSHROD Certificate Program before transferring to and earning her master’s Degree in Human
Resource Management and Organizational Development.
Ms. Harper found all her coursework in the MSHROD program relevant but particularly
appreciated the courses in HR and Technology with Dr. Linda Isenhour and Training with Dr.
Nick Blanchard. The HRIS course was valuable for Ms. Harper because it aided her in the HRIS
implementation at Systems In Motion. The training course was of assistance to Ms. Harper
because her involvement and performance in the training project at Eastern Michigan so
impressed another member of her team that she offered Ms. Harper her first HR professional
opportunity.
Advice that Ms. Harper conveys to current students of the MSHROD program is to
always be willing to take the extra step at work and volunteer for additional HR duties in order to
cultivate a reputation as a reliable “go-to” person. She also encourages all current students of the
program to first attain an HR internship as it is often difficult to secure a first permanent job in
human resources. She advises students who are finding it difficult to break into the profession to
concentrate their efforts into first obtaining a recruiting position as this is often an excellent
vehicle for entering other aspects of human resources. Her final recommendation is that students
continuously network. You don’t know where your first or next job will come from.
