Land Surface Temperature Product
- first AWG Option 1 Product  CIRA met with Bob Yu (NESDIS/StAR), the PI of the Land
Surface Temperature (LST) product.
 Land Surface Temperature has been chosen by the NWS to
be an AWG Option 1 Product.
 CIRA will be the NESDIS/StAR <-> WFO liaison for this
product and will
 Implement official LST Option 1 product AWG algorithm
 Generate real-time LST AWIPS products
 Distribute the LST product to Regional Headquarters
 Support WFOs with installing LST onto their AWIPS
systems
 Collect LST feedback from NWS forecasters
 If successful, CIRA will add 2 more NESDIS/StAR products
to this production cycle: vegetation fraction (green) and
flood/standing water.

Land Surface Temperature Product
- first AWG Option 1 Product Split window technique is
applied for the LST retrieval.
Datasets from GOES-8, GOES10 Imagers and the European
MSG satellite SERIVI sensor
data are used for testing the
algorithm.
A preliminary GOES-R land
surface temperature (LST)
algorithm has been applied to
Meteosat SEVIRI data to
retrieve LST. In the image on
the right, clouds are shown in
white, and the retrieved
surface temperatures are
shown in colors according to
the scale at the bottom of the
image.
Information and figure from
Bob Yu (NESDIS/StAR).

Systems Progress
 Orographic Rain Index (ORI) being sent to WRH
 MODIS Binary Cloud/Snow, MODIS High/Low Cloud/Snow
are ready for field deployment (running on CIRA AWIPS
system)
 GeoColor and Low Cloud/Fog will also be deployed to
Western Region server and FO’s when ORI installed.
.
 WES 9.2 will provide OB 9.2 upgrade. Efforts are underway
to complete necessary OS upgrades on AWIPS systems in
preparation for release.
 AWIPS II and Cooperative Institutes/GOES-R Proving
Ground Partners Dec. 4 telecon was very useful. Next
telecon is 27 Jan from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM (EST?)
 Development of “Proving Ground Products Online” (similar
to RAMSDIS Online) is underway.
