Title
IT Project Management
1.0 Purpose
Eastern Michigan University is committed to continuously improving the delivery of information technology
solutions within budget, on schedule, within scope and consistent with the University’s mission. This policy furthers that goal by establishing guiding principles for creation of processes and documentation as well
as consistent application of Project Management best practices in management and oversight of projects. 2.0 Scope
This policy covers all DoIT employees.
3.0 Policy
Information technology projects will be managed utilizing industry “best practice” guiding principles as defined by
the Project Management Institute’s (PMI’s) Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). These principles may be tailored as
determined by the project manager and approved as appropriate to the scope, risk, and cost of a project.
Templates are provided for various components of project management. At their discretion, IT directors may use
these templates or use other methods to achieve the same result – successful projects that are properly managed,
documented and communicated.
Projects that engage third party or vendor organizations to assist with project management may apply additional best
practices provided by these firms.
4.0 Responsibility for Implementation
The Chief Information Officer is responsible for the implementation of this policy.
5.0 Enforcement
Any employee found to violate federal or State of Michigan laws, EMU policies, procedures or standards of
conduct, will be subject to disciplinary action under University policy. Any student found to violate federal or State
of Michigan laws, EMU policies, procedures or standards of conduct, will be subject to disciplinary action under
EMU’s Student Code of Conduct. Any suspected violation of state or federal laws will be reported to the appropriate
legal authority for investigation.
The University reserves the right to protect its electronic resources from threats of immediate harm. This may
include activities such as disconnecting an offending computer system from the campus network, terminating a
running job on a computer system, or taking other action.
