Russell Hall
Russell Hall is located between Pauley-Rorem Hall and Harlan House. Russell Hall houses 96 students in four-person suites. Each
suite has a bathroom, two single bedrooms and one double-bedroom. It is air-conditioned and features an attractive lobby, small
kitchens and lounges on each floor, a large community space with a sizeable kitchen on the ground level and great use of natural
light. The building is be L-shaped with a brick exterior and pitched roof. The college provides furniture in each bedroom, living room
and the common areas in Russell Hall.
Smith Hall
Smith Hall is located behind the 10th Avenue Apartments, near the soccer practice fields. Smith Hall is a three-story building with
two suites on each floor (six suites total). Eight students will live in each suite (4 double rooms each). Each suite has a common
living room, kitchenette (microwave and refrigerator) and three bathrooms. The College provides furniture in each bedroom and
the common areas in Smith Hall. Amenities also include air conditioning, laundry facilities, study room, hall lounge and full kitchen.
10th Avenue Apartments
The 10th Avenue Apartments are located on 10th Avenue South, near the soccer practice fields. The 10th Avenue complex is
composed of one building consisting of two mirror image, two-story duplexes. Eight students live in each side. Each side has five
bedrooms (1 triple, 1 double and 3 singles) and a common living room, kitchen and bathroom. Furniture is provided in each
bedroom 10th Avenue Apartments; however, the College does not provide common area furniture.
Eligibility
All students returning to Cornell for the next academic year are eligible to sign up for housing in the suites and apartments.
Apartment and suite-style living offers more independent living options for students and requires a high level of maturity.
Therefore, these options are not made available to students whose disciplinary records indicate they are not ready for this
arrangement. Generally, this means no conduct violations for the past year. This also means that students who are found
responsible for violating a College policy while living in Cornell suites or apartments are at risk for being removed from that living
environment. Students who sign the lottery form give their consent for the Residence Life Office to review their conduct history at
Cornell College.
Selection Process
Each group will preference a first, second and third choice of living options (and may leave second or third choice blank if the group
is not interested in those options). The suites will be granted to the groups with the highest average number of points: 3 points for
each senior, 2 points for each junior and 1 point for each sophomore (refer to the room selection status information online for
details on how those are determined). Each group will draw a number in case there is a tie for points (lowest number is best).
• Groups of four interested in living only in one suite in Russell Hall as a group of four will draw one number.
• Groups of eight interested in living two suites in Russell Hall as first choice and 10th Avenue Apartments or Smith Hall as a
second option will draw two numbers: one for Russell Hall Suite 1 and one for Russell Hall Suite 2. The number drawn for
Suite 1 will be used for the 10th Avenue or Smith Hall lottery if the two groups of four are not selected to live in Russell Hall.
• Groups of eight interested in living only in 10th Avenue Apartments or Smith Hall will draw 1 number that will be used.
• Groups of eight interested in living in 10th Avenue Apartments or Smith Hall as first choice and interested in Russell Hall as
second choice will draw 2 numbers: one for 10th Avenue Apartments/Smith Hall/Russell Hall Suite 1 and one for Russell Hall
Suite 2.
Meal plans and housing rates
It is a requirement that all students living in Russell Hall or Smith Hall participate in the full board plan (14 or 20 meals per week).
Those students living in 10th Avenue Apartments also have the option to choose 7 meals per week. All rooms are billed at the rate
set by the College. A student living in a single in a Russell suite or a single in an apartment will be billed the single room rate.
All-gender housing
Residence Life recognizes that traditional housing options do not meet all students’ needs, in particular regarding a student’s gender
identity or gender expression. Students interested in entering into Russell Hall, Smith Hall or 10th Avenue Apartments in an allgender group must also complete the All-Gender Housing Request Form (available at http://www.cornellcollege.edu/residencelife/housing/room-selection/all-gender-housing.shtml).
