Overview
This 29-credit, one year post-baccalaureate certificate in SpeechLanguage Pathology is designed for individuals who are preparing to
seek admission into a graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology,
but who have not completed an undergraduate degree in this field.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
and a minimum 2.75 (out of 4.0) GPA.
This program is designed to bridge the gap between a student’s
undergraduate preparation and the criteria needed to be accepted in
Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) accredited graduate programs
in Speech-Language Pathology by providing them with the foundational
undergraduate coursework. The program can be completed in two,
full-time, consecutive terms, Fall and Winter. Students need to be
available during the day. No courses are offered during the Summer.
Admission into the EMU Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in SpeechLanguage Pathology program does not result in direct admission into
the EMU Graduate Speech-Language Pathology program. Upon
completion of the certificate, students are welcome to apply to the
EMU Graduate Program or the program of their choice.
Courses
Students take 5 courses (14 credits) in the Fall and 5 (15 credits) in the
Winter. Typical course sequence for a full-time student enrolled in the
certificate program:
Fall Semester
SPSI 332 - Acoustic Phonetics: Speech Science 2 hours
SPSI 334 - Applied Phonetics 3 hours
SPSI 335 - Introduction to Communication Disorders 3 hours
SPSI 336 - Physiologic Phonetics: Anatomy and Physiology 3 hours
SPSI 337 - Language Acquisition 3 hours
Winter Semester
SPSI 340 - Phonological and Articulation Disorders 3 hours
SPSI 342 - Language Disorders in Children 3 hours
SPSI 347 - Normal Aging and Health Issues in Speech-Language
Pathology 3 hours
SPSI 392 - Introduction to Audiology 3 hours
One course from the following:
SPGN 251 - Introduction to Inclusion and Disabilities Studies in a
Diverse Society (GEUS) 3 hours
SPGN 510 - Introduction to Inclusive Education and Disability
Studies 3 hours

Criteria for admission is lower than the highly competitive criteria
for admission into the graduate SLP Program. Students seeking
admission into the EMU Graduate Speech-Language Pathology
Program must apply following completion of the certificate and
must meet admission criteria for the graduate program.
This program does not include the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association (ASHA) undergraduate course requirements
outside of the discipline.

Accreditation
The master’s degree education program in Speech-Language Pathology
at Eastern Michigan University is accredited by the Council on Academic
Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
