Abstract:
Because of activities carried on by various motion agencies end planning groups, and in order to tasks
possible reel representation of farm people in these activities, it becomes inportent to recognize the
community as a dynamic end operating unit. The purpose of this study is to determine the nature and
characteristics of communities in Montana and the means and methods of delineating end defining
community boundaries.
Two approaches may be used in studying communities-- the psychological and the service approach.
The service approach was used in this study because it was thought to be more expedient and more
adaptable to a situation where sparsity of population and geographic isolation prevailed.
Fengus County, Montana was used as a typical Montana county for study, and an attempt was to
delineate community boundaries in the county, taking into consideration single-service areas and
multi-service communities It wee found that there are many single-service centers in Fergus County,
centers which offer only one service, such as a place to market wheat. From questionnaires sent to
farmers, it was discovered that more centers offered enough services so that they might be termed
multi-service community centers with the surrounding areas as their community There are seven
multi-service communities in Fergus County, nacely Denton, Coffee Creek, Winifred, Roy, Crass
Range, Foore and Lewistown. Each of the centers in these communities offers adequate school and
church facilities, servos as a training center for most of the surrounding area, serves as a center of
social activities , and appear to be the center of the interests end loyalty of the farmers in the
surrounding area.
Conclusions drawn from this study are, (1) that all of Fergus County is an area having a common
center, but the entire county cannot be considered a community because there are numerous points of
interest and service within the county, (2) that there are 7 distinct communities within Fergus County
evidencing a great interdependence among these ooraunitios and between the county and each
community and (3) that Fergus County is probably in a period of transition with respect to community
centers and organisation. FERGUS COUNTY 008WHITISE

Horever, the school f a c i l i t i e s now available w ill probably be adequate for
