Mount Howard – East Peak
A Proposed National Natural Landmark
from northeastern Oregon
Mount Howard – East Peak PNNL is located
near Enterprise, Oregon, in Wallowa County,
near the Idaho and Washington border
Mount Howard – East Peak is located in the center of the National
Park Service’s Columbia Plateau Biophysiographic Region
The map below shows the locations of the Montane
Grassland sites evaluated in the Columbia Plateau.
The proposed NNL
includes two peaks.
Mount Howard to the
north can be reached
by a tram from the
Wallowa Lake
recreation area. East
Peak and the southern
part of the NNL is
located in the Eagle
Cap Wilderness Area.
The view to the northeast from Mount
Howard show the Imnaha River Canyon and
Hells Canyon in the background
Montane and alpine grasslands usually occur
interspersed with subalpine woodlands
But the size and general quality of the diverse
grasslands at the site are what makes it unique.
These are the green fescue grasslands that initially
characterized the montane grasslands theme
But alpine fescue grasslands may actually be as
widespread montane grassland in the region
