Dr. Hershel M. Anderson, retired accounting faculty member, died on December 26,
2010 at the age of 81 years in Denton, Texas. Hershel graduated from Decatur High School
and served two tours in the U.S. Armed Forces as a 2nd Lieutenant stationed in Berlin
during the period between World War II and the Korean War.
He graduated from North Texas State University in 1954 with a B.B.A. in Accounting,
receiving the honor of Outstanding Accounting Graduate of 1954. Hershel spent two years
working as a member of the audit staff at Arthur Andersen in Dallas. He received a M.B.A.
degree in Accounting from University of Texas and his Ph.D. from University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana
in Accounting in 1961. Following his graduation, he began his illustrious teaching career at University of
Texas, Austin, followed by 27 years teaching at North Texas State University. He authored multiple
professional articles and textbooks including Introduction to Taxation, co-authored by Drs. Brock and
Summerfeld, which was one of the most widely used textbooks in the field for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Anderson, three children, Becky Molidor of Frisco, Texas, Roy Anderson,
CPA, of Denton, Texas and Beth Buchanan of Waco, Texas. Hershel has 12 grandchildren, one great grandchild
and is also survived by his 3 older brothers, Phil, Joe and James, and his numerous nieces and nephews whom
he loved dearly. Hershel leaves a legacy of compassion for the poor and under-privileged, working with the
Tarahumara Indians at St. Elena just outside Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico. Hershel and Elaine completed the
building of a school, which educates 60 students, grades 1-6, and established an orchard. He will be
remembered most for his witty sense of humor and his passion for helping others.
Dr. Frank M. Rachel, retired management professor, passed away December 31, 2010, at
the age of 80 in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Rachel was born May 27, 1930, in Idabel, OK to
Horace and Ottolyne Miller Rachel. He married his high school sweetheart, Hilda
Pennington, January 27, 1952. They were the parents of two sons, Geary and Mark.
Frank received his doctorate from the University of Illinois Urbana in 1962. His teaching
career began in 1962 at what was then North Texas State University. After moving to
Denton, Frank became a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Rachel published books in his field of management. Numerous articles were published in professional
journals. Frank was a consultant for a variety of companies. He was a Regents Professor and a passionate
teacher with high expectations. He motivated students to achieve through intellectually challenging them to
think and apply theory.
Dr. Rachel was a man of varied interests – flying, sailing, traveling, camping, fly fishing and photography. He
developed many friendships through these activities. Dr. Rachel is survived by his wife, Hilda; son, Mark
Rachel of Plano; sister, Retta Goss of Georgetown; and granddaughters, Brooke Moore, Rachel Rachel, and
Chelsea Rachel, who were the joy of his life. He is preceded in death by his parents and son, Geary.
