Description
Mike Mcfarlane called the meeting to order at 7:30, took roll
and introduced the agenda
Case Competition
• Currently completed – 5 sponsors, site visits, location and
awards. Now working on logistics
• Three schools confirmed – U of Arizona, U of Connecticut,
U of Indiana. More to come – Alok had 7 schools say yes.
Maximum number of schools = 16
• Completed a trial case two weeks ago with the Vancouver
and Singapore teams. Great judging. Vancouver team
leaves in two days for competition this weekend.
• March 9 – case practice. Need volunteers to judge. This will
be a practice session for the Singapore and CoMIS
competitions
• CoMiS consists of the alternates to Vancouver and
Singapore plus a ”quarterback” selected by Corrie
• CoMIS could use volunteers to help with registration, etc.
Dates are Thursday, April 4 through Saturday, April 6
• Alok – case study for CoMIS is nearly ready. Will be final by
the end of February
• Travelers Insurance holds a case competition in the fall to
which they invite schools to participate. This year our
team came in first. Both the Vancouver and Singapore
teams participate.

Curriculum / SAP
• The Spring session of Class 3014 is full with a waiting list
• Corrie – good feedback from the fall class. Went well:
o SAP has a difficult user interface. Students were
set up to know what to expect – that helped
o Syllabus
• Corrie – what can be improved
o Assumed student had the supply chain knowledge
– had to do remedial lectures
o Optimization from section to section (was first
time teaching the class)
• Question: are any other classes teaching the end-to-end
processes? Answer – Intro To Operations
• Comment: should this be a requirement for all MIS majors?
• SAP University Alliance – growing adoption in schools
o Carlson
o Metro State
o St Cloud
o Valley City State University – ND
o Eau Claire
• SAP simulations are available to Alliance Members
o 9 total simulations
o 3 are free
o 6 advanced simulations require payment ($40 per
student or $160 per team)
• Corrie to evaluate the simulations for spring semester.
Decision not yet made.
• Alok – planning on offering an Advanced course next fall
• Advanced course will include:
o Currently there is too much in the first course
(offload some to the advanced course)
o Course will go through the approval process in
February
o Simulation and exercises will be part of the course
o Want to also integrate simulation into other
classes, where applicable
o Want holistic view for students
• Sub-team will meet for extended breakfast in February to
discuss enterprise systems and IT trends in the
marketplace – volunteers welcome

Continuing Education
• If Alok has needs, the committee is available to provide
feedback
• Business Analytics and Big Data– received overwhelming
positive feedback
• Alok needs to submit the final proposal, financial plan and
implementation plan for a full-time Master’s program by
mid-March
• Complete program would be run in one year – start in the
summer and ending the following spring
• Not possible to have it ready for the summer of 2013; will
start in 2014
• Part-time program would start within a year after the 2014
start
• Question – could the program run on Friday / Saturday so
business people could attend. Answer – not to start. Parttime will follow the traditional program. Business people
could have conflict of interest on projects
• Question – what committee help is needed as the March
date gets closer? Answer – appreciate the help – especially
where there is business decision making; will ask for more
feedback. When approved, will need help with business
projects, expertise and speakers. This help needed will
start later in the semester
Program Status
• Program size—continues to be a good challenge.
• 251 students – an increase of 10% over fall
o 205 majors
o 45 minors
• Every MIS class is full
• Question – why can’t the increase be sustainable? Answer:
the Dean hasn’t determined that the increase isn’t
students taking more classes vs. students moving from
other majors. The Dean’s office is new and indicates this
could be a temporary variance. They don’t have the
mechanisms in place to show where the numbers are
coming from. Also can’t quantify how much demand is
there.
• Hiring – not easy to find skills needed to deliver what they
want with the quality needed. These logistics will be
eventually worked out. Currently recruiting two facility
members for this year
• Question – has Carlson growth been at the same level as
the MIS program? Answer – stabilized about two years ago
at 2,300 – 2,400. MIS outpaces Carlson.
• Alok appreciates all the feedback. He is interfacing with all
aspects of Carlson
• Question – what is the MBA growth? Answer: MBA is by
concentration, not tracked. Enrollment – almost all classes
are full – huge waiting list for Analytics.
Ann Herzog-Olson, Director, Corporate and Foundation
Relations, Carlson School.
• Available to raise funds
• Will visit businesses with the Dean
• Help companies become more engaged with Carlson
