Faculty will be sent the portfolios before that meeting to review. It is hoped that the individual faculty member who proposed the portfolio will attend to present their proposal. 4. College of Forest Resources Garb Day Celebration is the weekend of May 19, 2007 at The Center for Sustainable Forestry at Pack Forest. In addition to the many physical activities, the students have proposed holding a “Quiz Bowl.” Faculty are encouraged to send Dr. Bradley any clever (or perhaps not so) quiz questions. Suggested topics are: forestry history, silviculture, policy, and restoration. 5. As part of UW Washington Weekend a tree planting will take place at the Union Bay Natural Area. Alumni of the College are sponsoring this event. Faculty enquired as to the status of Arbor Day activities the College has sponsored in the past. Recently, these activities have brought young elementary school children to the College who have had the benefit of presentations and the opportunity to plant trees. Dr. Ettl admitted he might have been responsible for the hiatus of this event. He, in conversation with alumni, thought it would be prudent to find a sponsor for this event, and since one could not be found, it was decided to put the event on hold for the foreseeable future. Faculty want to know what to do with the “kid-based” props they have developed for the event. Dr. Ettl said to contact him and he would make sure the props were tended to. PRESENTATIONS No presentations were scheduled. FACULTY ACTIONS 1. Proposed Faculty Candidates under Consideration for the Natural Resource Informatics faculty position a. Dr. Woodam Chung b. The results of the vote are recorded in the Faculty Office. 5. Proposed Curriculum Changes Michelle Trudeau was called upon to present the following proposed curriculum changes. Before she began she reminded faculty that Washington Weekend is April 26-28th. College of Forest Resources will host an Open House and there will be ongoing presentations and a poster session in the Forest Club Room. In addition, Student Services will have a booth on the HUB lawn. The Paper Science group will have a paper making demonstration on Friday in Bloedel Hall. She also indicated that the Curriculum Options were approved by the UW curriculum committee and has moved forward to the tri-campus committee. In light of that approval, marketing for the options has begun and a snappy new poster has been developed and is being distributed. Gerard Schreuder moved and David Briggs seconded that the following curriculum changes be considered by the faculty: 1. PSE 201 and CFR 505—name change from “Introduction to Pulp and Paper Technology” to “Introduction to Pulp, Paper and Bioproducts.” 2. ESRM 480 and 481—combine these two courses, title and prerequisite changes. Proposed changes are to: Combine ESRM 480 and 481 (Field practicum) into one course (this application is accompanied by one to drop ESRM481); change the title of 480 to “Landscape Plant Science and Sustainable Management” to broaden the scope of the course with an emphasis in sustainable management of landscape plants. The content of ESRM 481 will be incorporated into ESRM480 as lab/field component. In the past, only a few students in ESRM 480 have been concurrently enrolled in ESRM 481. This new format should allow all students in ESRM 480 to experience practical aspects of landscape plant science. 3. PSE 406—title change “Natural Products Chemistry” describes better the syllabus and the material covered in the course. The students will learn the chemistry of lignocellulosic biomass such as: cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and extractives and what kind of products can we make out of biomass. The old name “Wood Chemistry” did not reflect explicitly the material covered during this course. Moreover, to accommodate the currently state of technology, research and environmental changes, bioethanol production will be covered during last four lectures of the course. The Faculty voted to approve the curriculum changes: 1. The results of the vote to change the name of PSE 201 and CFR 505 to Introduction to Pulp, Paper, and Bioproducts was 27 Approve, 0 Oppose, 0 Abstain. 2. The results of the vote to combine ESRM 480 and 481 and to change the name of the course to Landscape Plant Science and Sustainable Management was 27 Approve, 0 Oppose, 0 Abstain. 3. The results of the vote to change the name of PSE 406 to Natural Products Chemistry was 27 Approve, 0 Oppose, 0 Abstain.
