Against this background, the present workshop
wants to:
divulge the available expertise at CESAM with respect to fire-related research topics;
create a platform to further collaboration amongst
national and internationals experts, in particular
towards multi-disciplinary research approaches to
avoid wildfires, combat them and mitigate their
effects under present-day and future climate conditions.

Background and objectives
Wildfires are an important environmental problem,
especially in Mediterranean-type climate regions. In
Portugal, wildfires consume on average 100.000 ha
of rural areas each year and over 400.000 ha in
dramatic years like 2003. Furthermore, the
frequency of wildfires in Portugal is expected to
remain the same or increase in the future, due to the
nature of Portuguese forestry activities as well as to
likely future climate conditions increasingly propitious
to the occurence of wildfires.
