In Portugal, wildfires consume on average 100.000 ha of rural areas each year and over 400.000 ha in dramatic years like 2003. Furthermore, the frequency of wildfires in Portugal is expected to remain the same or increase in the future, due to the nature of Portuguese forestry activities as well as to likely future climate conditions increasingly propitious to the occurence of wildfires.
