We received news that the budget cut for School of Forest Resources for the coming fiscal year is $229,000 or 4% of non tenured faculty state supported budgets. We will receive an addition allotment of temporary money from Provost office which is the same as last year, $143,000, we expect this is the last time we’ll see this money, and we received our first ABB allocation which is $113,000. In the future we’ll be a paying tech fee and additional monies for electricity in the form of a “tax”. We now pay for phones, but the new paradigm means we will be paying per FTE at $60/per month. The College has said it will pay the difference from what we paid before to what we will pay in future.
•
We have been told that at this time we will get full ICR returned, but will pay a series of “taxes” on it. 0%
IDC rate is subsidized by other grants. The estimated break-even point is 15%. SFR’s average IDC is among the lowest in CoEnv. SFR is 14%, ESS is 33%, Atmosphere is 37%. It is no longer an advantage to have the off-campus rate.

Internship opportunities. When Gary Machlis was here for the Distinguished Alumni Series. He challenged the School and said if we nominate someone for an internship and can give them money he will give them an incredible experience in Washington, DC. Asking for more direct support and creating business plans may be a way to have donors and other constituencies support our programs rather in addition to creating endowments. There are internships available at Pack Forest, Friday is the deadline for submitting applications, currently there is no response.
•
How do we create metrics to determine the value of our outreach activities? We hope the new Dean will know and acknowledge these activities. Currently, they do not. The Burke Museum and Washington Sea

One of the elements of the September Strategic Planning Retreat is to talk about these things. And, in light of the ABB budget model, we anticipate that PMT criteria will be revised to be in alignment with what will bring us more funding.
•
Marzluff is asking for McIntyre Stennis funding proposals. The projects are to start this summer. New
Research Committee is reviewing the proposals. $130,000 will be awarded. Each project will be limited to no more than $35,000 per project.
•
We will need to review the faculty position strategic plan, especially regarding Research Faculty jobs. NSF has a postdoc mentoring plan that has to be in place for NSF funding.
