recognition of the intellectual property agreement. The revised form is part of the agenda package.
• The College of the Environment Health and Safety Committee will be holding elections.
Nominations for the committee can be sent to Eric Snoozy, snoozye@uw.edu. Eric is a new student

willing to serve) you may nominate yourself. Nominations close on October 26. Call for
nominations poster is attached.
• Because Clare Ryan is now the Director of the Program on the Environment she serves on the
College of the Environment Executive Committee, thus, she had to give up her seat on the College
Council. SFR’s alternate, Kristiina Vogt, will complete Clare’s term (which ends 09/15/2012), so
SFR faculty need to elect another alternate. If you are interested in this position, please contact
Nevada. If you want to nominate someone else please confirm that the person you want to nominate
is willing to serve. This alternate position will also end on 9/15/2012. Nominations are due to
Nevada by November 16, 2011. Discussion and vote will be at the November 22, 2011 Faculty
Meeting.
• Environmental Exploration Seminar proposals are due on October 31, 2011. More information is

• Proposed Research Associate Appointment for Cassandra Garcia
Clare Ryan moved and Frank Greulich seconded the motion that the faculty approve the appointment
of Cassandra Garcia as Research Associate. This appointment is sponsored by Stanley Asah. Dr.
Garcia obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in Environmental Monitoring in August
2011. Dr. Garcia will work on a NIFA-funded project examining the Social Feasibility and Impact
Assessment of a sustainable biofuels system for the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Asah has funding for a
postdoc for an initial period of 12 months and renewal for another 12-24 months. The appointment
will begin on November 10, 2011. The faculty voted to approve this appointment. The results of the
vote are on file in the Director’s office.

in the Director’s office.
• Consideration to change the ESRM curriculum name to Environmental and Forest Sciences
Susan Bolton moved and Frank Greulich seconded the motion that the faculty approve changing the
name of the curriculum and major be changed to Environmental Science and Terrestrial Resource
Management.
Clare Ryan moved and Ivan Eastin seconded the motion that the faculty approve changing the

DISCUSSION
10:45
The School of Forest Resources name change to the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences has a
condition that must be met before the name can be changed. The Provost wants the name of the SFR
curriculum to be the same as or similar to the new name of the school. The faculty will also be asked to
change the graduate course prefix from CFR to another acronym that will most likely be SEFS.
DISCUSSION:
Although it is within the purview of the faculty, the Dean has asked us to consider changing the name of
the School’s curriculum so that it is more in alignment with the new name of the School. When
Environmental Science and Resource Management was first proposed several years ago other units were
concerned about “Resource Management” seeming all-encompassing. What was asked of us then was
to narrow the scope to “terrestrial resource management.” In fact the other units in the college are all
right with the “environmental science” part of the name. Then we were an independent unit, and now
we are in the same college with the units that are concerned. Other units in the College think we are
claiming the whole environment. With the prospect of more budget cuts it seems reasonable to consider
this suggestion. Dr. Bare suggests that we add a T (for terrestrial) and call the curriculum ESTRM.
Susan Bolton suggested Watershed instead, but it was thought too narrow. The proposal to change the
name of the school was put forward to the Dean a year ago. We have been recently informed that the
name change was not acted on because the University was seeking tuition setting authority and did not
want to make any changes that might jeopardize that opportunity. Dr. Sprugel views this request as a
reasonable trade-off. Dr. Bare points out that this change might help us seek SAF accreditation for a
MFR in terrestrial ecology; a lot of forestry schools are moving away from forestry per se. The
curriculum name change is best to be timed with the start of a new academic year, thus, if approved, this
change will go into effect Autumn Quarter 2012.
The discussion regarding changing the graduate course prefix focused on two possibilities. One is SEFS
(to reflect the acronym for the new name of the School) and EFS which is as simple as the previous CFR
acronym. The faculty thought having the two prefixes be different is valid, and is certainly how we have
had it in the past, and they liked the simplicity of the three letter prefix EFS.
