ANNOUNCEMENTS
• The College of the Environment Health and Safety Committee elections are going on. Two people were
nominated, Roy Farrow, a gardener at UWBG, and Pat Saunders, assistant to the director at Pack Forest.
You should have received a call to vote. The balloting closes at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday November
9.
• Because Clare Ryan is now the Director of the Program on the Environment she serves on the College of the
Environment Executive Committee, thus, she had to give up her seat on the College Council. SFR’s
alternate, Kristiina Vogt, will complete Clare’s term (which ends 09/15/2012), so SFR faculty need to elect
another alternate. If you are interested in serving as the College Council alternate until 9/15/2012, please
nominate yourself. If you would like to nominate someone else, please confirm with them that they are
willing to serve before you nominate them. Nominations are due to Nevada by November 16, 2011.
Discussion and vote will be at the November 22, 2011 Faculty Meeting.
• The bulbs in the projectors used for teaching are starting to shut off because of overheating. Marc Morrison
believes this might be due to the fact that the faculty are not allowing the projectors to cool down before
putting them back in the case. Replacement projectors will cost about $1500 each. Please take care of the
projectors we have, and turn off the bulb and allow the fan to run until the machine is cooled down before
stowing them away in the cases.
• The deadline for applications for Professional Paid Leave to be submitted to the Director is December 1st.
The College of the Environment policy for Paid Professional Leave is available online at http://coenv.washington.edu/admingateway/faculty/faculty_paid_professional_leave.shtml.)
• Bruce Balick, chair of the Director’s Search Committee would like to solicit names of candidates.

DISCUSSION
Currently Summer Quarter curriculum is offered at the convenience of the faculty who want to teach in the
summer. With the further roll-out of the ABB budget model, how summer quarter revenues are managed will
likely change (after the FY13 budget). With the potential of a percentage of SCH-based revenue coming back
to us for Summer Quarter offerings, we might want to think about Summer Quarter more like the regular
academic year. A discussion of this topic will be undertaken at the meeting.
The Summer Quarter arrangement currently is that faculty who would like to teach arrange with UWEO to
teach. So far it has been a convenience to us but now money will flow back to units similarly to how it happens
in the regular academic year. Base budgets will be adjusted according to amount we teach during the summer.
We should begin thinking about this because we’d get a payback for increased summer teaching. Also, summer
quarter teaching could take care of course bottlenecks, which might increase the graduation rate. The faculty
expressed a number of questions: Would reimbursement to faculty be the same? Will UWEO still administer
it? Or, will UWEO get out of the summer quarter business? How will TAs get managed? Would metrics in the
summer be the same as the academic year? It appears SFR would get all the revenue that is generated after any
“tax.” The faculty wondered if they preferred to teach in the summer could they have a different quarter off?
It’s unclear if faculty would be able to teach summer in order to have another quarter off during the regular
academic year. The arrangement should bring more money to us. We’ll be discussing this periodically as more
details come to us. It is estimated that this would go into effect Summer of 2013.
