appointment will be for one quarter. Mr. Scherba received his masters from the Biomathematics Group
(now QERM) at the University of Washington in 1975. In 1978 he completed all course work and written
qualifying examinations for a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics at the UW in 1978, and he received a
M.B.A. from the UW’s Foster School of Business in Finance in 1981. Mr. Scherba will teach Q Sci 291

2011. Dr. Duggan will work on a Department of Defense-funded project subcontracted to the University of
Washington through Stanford University. Dr. Duggan will develop habitat and habitat-threat models for
multiple species using existing data and she will work with economists at Stanford to evaluate the relative
costs and benefits of pro-actively protecting species on base versus mitigating on-base losses with the
purchase of off-base habitat. She will be co-supervised by Josh Tewksbury. The appointment is expected

additional resources. The faculty voted to approve this appointment. The results of the vote are on file in

PRESENTATION
Gordon Bradley will provide an update regarding the Faculty Portfolio process. He stated that the process is
similar to what we have done before. The information the process provides puts the director in a good position
to negotiate with the Dean for what we need showing how it fits in SEFS and the CoEnv. It’s in our best
interest to work in advance so that we are positioned to take advantage of opportunities. What are issues of
consequence that might position us to take next steps?
Small focus groups met to draft a list of opportunity areas. Inventory of the tenured faculty in terms of
disciplines was presented. When considering the portfolio, faculty should probably think about cross
fertilization funding that serves our community locally and globally. Are there other ways to look at this? It’s
conceivable in the next 5 years that about 1/3 of the current faculty will retire. What the nomination form asks
is to name the position and type of faculty that is appropriate (research, lecturer, state funded, tenure track, etc.).
The portfolios can be nominated by faculty groups or individuals. Think about relating positions to one or more
opportunity areas.
An announcement will be sent out to say nominations are open. Faculty will have a period of time to develop.
There will be a faculty meeting to discuss each nomination, then a ranking exercise, the director can then revise
to be ready to negotiate with Dean. Please think about the kinds of people to bring on board and how they
would fit in the current faculty profile and how they would fit in to the College and UW.
Suggest broad strengths we’d like to build upon, no need to submit a fully developed portfolio. Let’s recognize
that the portfolios are not timeless. Faculty often have a bias toward disciplinarity. How do we write the job
description? Having many different positions will allow us to cast a wide net. Where are the areas that we
think we want to go? Can they be couched in terms of ABB impact, how it affects our future funding? The
long form speaks to the areas where ABB is important (teaching and research). Some of the positions could be
research. This is the traditional way we have thought about the positions. Map our skill sets then cross link
with the opportunity areas.
DISCUSSION
No discussion is scheduled.
