Elected Faculty Council Minutes (03/08/04)§ The EFC convened in 114 Anderson at 10:30, Monday, March 8, 2004. In attendance were: Darlene Zabowski, Doug Sprugel, Peter Schiess, Gerard Schreuder, and Frank Greulich. The following items of business were discussed: Review of the Promotion Evaluation Process Prior to today's Council meeting an announcement was sent out to junior faculty who were evaluated for promotion this academic year (see attachment). Two of the listed faculty responded to the announcement. One indicated his satisfaction with the process; the other inquired as to the nature of the Council's review but, upon clarification, did not express a wish to meet with it. The Council had an open-door meeting at the appointed time and place. No junior faculty who had been evaluated for promotion appeared during the course of the Council meeting. The Council, having not been advised of any complaints and hearing none from the affected faculty, concluded that there was no basis for initiating an investigation of the evaluation process. Council Participation in the Assessment of Future College Directions A discussion of the Dean's request for Council participation in the assessment of future directions for the College took place. It was unclear if the Dean expected the Council to duplicate the effort of the ad hoc faculty group he has previously appointed. Nor is it clear to the Council that it is suitably composed to address this topic. Of particular concern is the paucity of younger faculty on the Council - precisely those who will be most significantly impacted by these decisions. It was decided to wait until our next lunch-time meeting with the Dean (3/15/04) to obtain clarification of his expectations with respect to Council input. Miscellaneous items of discussion The Council will next meet on Monday, April 5, from 11:30 to 12:20. Subsequent Council meetings will be held every other week during spring quarter; viz., April 19, May 3, and May 17. Council members will be advised regarding the location of these meetings as soon as a room is assigned. We want to offer each of you individually the opportunity to meet with us during that time to make any comments bearing on the process followed by the College in evaluating your eligibility for promotion. These comments will be made individually and held in strict confidence by the Council. If this time is inconvenient for you please advise us prior to Monday's meeting and we will determine a mutually acceptable time for our meeting. Once again, these are individual, confidential meetings with the Council and we are only examining the process, not the results of the evaluation. Please advise via e-mail to the EFC chair if you wish to meet with the Council at that time or any other mutually acceptable time during the coming week.
