What is the pedagogy of the iPad?

What is the pedagogy of the iPad?
•
What approaches to learning and teaching
does the iPad best support?
•
What is the best way to adopt-adapt the iPad
into our lives (to learn the way of the iPad)?
•
What can the iPad teach us about ourselves
and the world?
Robert O’Toole, Academic Technology, University of Warwick, March 2014
Ubiquitous Computing
Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre, late 80’s
"the idea of spreading computers ubiquitously, but
invisibly, throughout the environment.”!
!
“the anthropologists of the Work Practices and Technology
area within PARC, led by Lucy Suchman, were observing
the way people really used technology, not just the way
they claimed to use technology.”!
!
"We wanted to put computing back in its place, to
reposition it back into the environmental background, to
concentrate on human-to-human interfaces, and less on
human-to-computer ones.”!
!
"we came to realize that we were, in fact, actually
redefining the entire relationship of humans, work, and
technology for the post-PC era."
Mark Weiser, Rich Gold, John Seely Brown, 1999

Design Capability Examples
1. I ask Nathalie for advice on what app
to use, she demos an app that she uses.
2. I get the app from the Apple App Store instantly,
this is how apps spread.
3. I can start using the app to evaluate how well it
fits with my needs, if it will stick in my workflow,
and how it will help my capabilities to grow.

Ian Samson, Paper: An Elegy
Working as a team, create an electronic presentation (poster, slideshow, Prezi or other format) that proves the greatness of
books, by looking at a single, especially important book in the University Library.!
!
Hint: don’t just talk about the contents of the book, consider its materiality, its location in the Library, the other books around
it, its importance to its readers (including you) and to history.!
!
You will do this in four separate stages: !
!
1. choose a book as your special book - use the iPad to check it is on the shelves and to find its location. Use the Library
Catalogue at http://webcat.warwick.ac.uk!
2. go out into the Library and use your iPads to collect photos and videos (of people, places, texts etc) that can inspire your
creative process and which might be used in your presentation.!
3. sit together and review your collections of inspiring images and videos.!
4. working together, create your presentation (WE ARE NOT DOING THIS STAGE TODAY!)
Observer tasks:
Watch how your team members work together, directly and as mediated by the iPad. We are looking for
instances where the iPad might have changed how they do things, how the four capabilities have been
changed. Note down instances of this in the appropriate box, including photo and audio evidence if possible.
