ARCHIVED ARTICULATION GUIDE
May 2012
Wayne County Community College District – AA in Pre-Social Worker
Eastern Michigan University – Bachelor of Science in Social Work
Additional Information:
1. In completing the coordinated program of study for this articulation agreement, course substitutions should be made with the guidance
of the advisors (indicated below) at both institutions to assure that all requirements are satisfied. Each institution will determine the
satisfaction of their individual program and degree requirements. WCCCD courses indicated with an * are required for EMU’s
Bachelor of Social Work Program.
2. Students whose transcripts are endorsed as “MACRAO Satisfied” will only be required to satisfy three of EMU’s general education
requirements, noted on the articulation guide and listed below. These requirements may be completed at the most appropriate time for
the student, whether before or after enrollment at EMU:
a) an approved course in Quantitative Reasoning: [at WCCCD: MAT 131, 155 or 171] or [at EMU: MATH 110; or if MATH 104 or
its equivalent is completed with a 2.0 or better, MATH 105, 118, 119, 120, 140, 170; COSC106; PHIL 181; PLSC 210; SOCL
250 or STS 224 can be chosen.]
b) an approved course in Global Awareness or US Diversity: [AAS 131, 175, 253; DAN 115; ENG 212, 260, 261, 266, 290, 292;
HIS 152; HUM 126; MUS 104; MWS 102; PHL 101, 102; WS 218; at WCCCD]
c) an approved Learning Beyond the Classroom course or experience offered by EMU. [SWRK 350L at EMU]
3. To use MACRAO, students must request that an official community college transcript, with the “MACRAO Satisfied” stamp, be sent to
EMU’s Admissions Office. Students who do not have “MACRAO Satisfied” on their community college transcript will be required to
satisfy EMU’s general education requirements as listed in the Undergraduate Catalog. The MACRAO stamp may be completed after
admission to EMU, however, students should inform advisors at EMU that they intend to complete MACRAO, or they may be advised
to complete additional courses for the general education program.
4. Only courses with a grade of “C” or better (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) will be accepted for transfer to EMU.
5. Under this agreement, EMU will waive the 60-hour rule and require that a minimum of 51 semester hours must be completed at the
four-year college level, with a minimum of 30 hours in courses offered by EMU, of which at least 15 hours are in program
requirements at the 300-level or above. Of the last 30 hours completed before graduating, at least 10 hours must be in courses offered
by EMU. A minimum of 124 credit hours, completed in-residence or accepted in transfer, is required for graduation. Courses listed in
this guide may be completed at the most opportune time for students, whether before or after admission to EMU, as long as
appropriate pre-requisites are satisfied.
6. Eligibility for placement in the required two semesters of senior-year field placement includes:
a) A cumulative GPA of 2.3 in all EMU courses (must be maintained through field placement),
b) A minimum grade of “C” in each required SWRK course, completion of all required social work courses through the 300 level
(including courses that fulfill Life Span Human Growth & Development and Abnormal Psychology),
c) A minimum of 40 hours (post high school) volunteer work, internship, or work-experience at a social welfare agency or
organization that is documented by a reference letter from the supervisor of that experience. WCCCD internships may be used to
satisfy this requirement.
d) A reflective essay on the student’s interest in social work as a career, meant to assist the student in assessing their own fit with the
values and ethics of the School of Social Work and the social work profession.
7. Students must meet all admission requirements at the time of application for admission to EMU, including submitting transcripts from
all previously attended colleges. WCCCD students will receive equal consideration with other students for course registration and
financial aid.
8. Application to the Social Work program is completed while enrolled in SWRK 251. Students cannot enroll in the 300/400 level social
work courses at EMU without seeing an advisor. SWRK 120, 200, 251, and 222 are pre-requisites for all upper division SWRK
courses and must be completed before starting the professional sequence at EMU. Students may enroll in these EMU courses at
EMU’s main campus or at an off-campus site during the last two semesters of enrollment at WCCCD.
9. Students are encouraged to contact the Social Work Program Coordinator early, before applying to EMU. To facilitate the evaluation
of transcripts, students should indicate they are using this articulation guide on their application to EMU and bring a copy to all
advising sessions. Copies of the articulation guide are available on EMU’s webpage at www.emich.edu/ccr/artguide.php.
Effective Dates: May 1, 2012 through April 30, 2015.
This agreement replaces the articulation agreement made August 2002 and renewed 2007. Students who began this program prior to fall
2007 have the option of following the agreement in place when they started or using this agreement. If this agreement is not renewed at the
end of the effective period, students who already started the program will be given three additional years to be admitted to EMU under the
terms of this agreement.
