Eastern Michigan University – Bachelor of Science in Social Work
Additional Information:
1.
In completing the coordinated program of study for this articulation agreement, course substitutions should be made with
the guidance of the advisors (indicated below) at both institutions to assure that all requirements are satisfied. Each
institution will determine the satisfaction of their individual program and degree requirements. MCCC courses indicated
with an * are required for EMU’s Social Work Program.
2. A student whose transcript is endorsed as “MACRAO Satisfied” will only be required to meet three of EMU’s general
education requirements, noted on the articulation guide and listed below. These may be completed at the most
convenient time for the student, whether before or after admission to EMU.
a) an approved course in Quantitative Reasoning: [MATH 154, 157, or 162 at MCCC] or [MATH 110 at EMU]
b) an approved course in Global Awareness or US Diversity: [ENGL 240, 255, 266; GEOG 152; HIST 159, 255, 256;
POLSC 211, 252; or SOC 153 at MCCC]
c) an approved Learning Beyond the Classroom course or experience offered by EMU [SWRK 350L]
To use MACRAO, students must request that an official community college transcript, with the “MACRAO Satisfied”
endorsement, be sent to EMU’s Admissions Office. Students, who do not have “MACRAO Satisfied” on their community
college transcript, will be required to satisfy EMU’s general education requirements as listed in the Undergraduate
Catalog. The MACRAO requirements may be completed after admission to EMU, however, students should inform
advisors at EMU that they intend to complete MACRAO, or they may be advised to complete additional courses for the
general education program.
3. Only courses with a grade of “C” or better (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) will be accepted for transfer to EMU.
4. Under this agreement, EMU will waive the 60-hour rule and require that a minimum of 51 credit hours must be
completed at the four-year college level, of which 30 hours must be in courses offered by EMU. Of the last 30 hours
completed before graduating, a minimum of 10 credit hours must be in courses offered by EMU. A minimum of 124
credit hours of combined in-residence and transfer credit is required for graduation.
5. Eligibility for placement in the required two semesters of senior-year field placement includes:
a) A cumulative GPA of 2.3 in all EMU courses (must be maintained through field placement),
b) A minimum grade of “C” in each required SWRK course, completion of all required social work courses through the
300 level (including courses that fulfill EDPS 325 Life Span Human Growth & Dev and PSY 360 Abnormal Psych),
c) A minimum of 40 hours (post high school) volunteer work, internship, or work-experience at a social welfare agency
or organization that is documented by a reference letter from the supervisor of that experience. MCCC internships
may be used to satisfy this requirement.
d) A written essay on the student’s interest in social work as a career.
6. Students must meet all admission requirements at the time of application for admission to EMU, including submitting
transcripts from all previously attended colleges. MCCC students will receive equal consideration with other students
for course registration and financial aid.
7. Application to the Social Work program is completed while enrolled in SWRK 251. Students cannot enroll in the
300/400 level social work courses at EMU without seeing an advisor. SWRK 120, 200, 251, and 222 are pre-requisites
for all upper division SWRK courses and must be completed before starting the professional sequence at EMU. Students
may enroll in these courses at EMU’s main campus or at an off-campus site during the last two semesters of enrollment
at Monroe County Community College.
8. Students are encouraged to contact the Social Work Program Advisor early, before applying to EMU. To facilitate the
evaluation of transcript(s), students should indicate they are using this articulation guide when they apply to EMU and
bring a copy of the articulation guide to all advising sessions. Copies of the articulation guide are available on EMU’s
website at www.emich.edu/ccr/artguide.php
Effective Dates: September 1, 2013 until August 31, 2016. This is a renewal of an agreement made in May 2004 and
renewed in September 2007 and 2010. Students who began this program prior to the new effective date have the option of
changing to this guide. If this agreement is not renewed at the end of the effective period, students who already started the
program will be given three additional years to be admitted to EMU under the terms of this agreement.
