Honors Commencement Graduate Biographies
Reem Aabed, from Farmington Hills, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Children's
Literature, and Highest Honors, earning a major in Children's Literature and a minor in Leadership. After graduation, she plans
to pursue a Master’s degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs. What Reem appreciated most about being in The Honors College
was working on her senior thesis alongside her mentor, Dr. Ramona Caponegro. Reem has been involved with the Admissions
Welcome Center, the Muslim Student Association, and The Honors College. She was also a recipient of the Honors Undergraduate
Fellowship, The Distinguished Student of Children's Literature of the Year Award, and the Honors Senior Thesis Award. She
would like to thank her Mom, Dad, Dr. Caponegro, and The Honors College for their continuous love, guidance, and support.
Ilkhomjon Amanov, from Samarkand, Uzbekistan, graduates with University Honors and Highest Honors, earning a major in
Accounting Information Systems. After graduation, he plans to work for Ernst & Young's Advisory practice. What Ilkhomjon
appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the personable and genuine advisors who consistently supported him
and created a sense of community. He actively participated in various student activities; he was a President of the International
Student Association, Senator at the EMU Student Government, President of Information Systems Audit and Control Association,
and many others. Ilkhomjon took part in the Study Abroad program in Dublin, Ireland and London, UK, and was a recipient of
the National Scholars Program, Leader's Awards, Regents Award, Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship, and Outstanding
Junior and Senior Student of the College of Business. Ilkhomjon worked as an Honors Student Fellow at The Honors College for
over two years as well. He would like to thank his family, EMU's faculty and staff, especially The Honors College, and friends
for their continued support.
Deborah Anderson, from Romulus, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Criminal Justice and a
minor in Psychology. After graduation, she plans to join the Air Force as an officer and pursue a master’s degree while serving.
What Deborah appreciated most about being in The Honors College was their commitment and dedication to honors students'
success and involvement. She would like to thank our university for the memories made, lessons learned, and everlasting
experience endured.
Kaitlyn Rae Ashbaugh, from Roseville, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Elementary Special
Education with a focus in Cognitive Impairments. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in teaching. What Kaitlyn
appreciated most about being in The Honors College was building relationships with other honors students. She has been a
member of Best Buddies, the women's club lacrosse team, and New Life Church and was a recipient of the Regents Gold, and
James and Helene Reader End Scholarships. She would like to thank her family, friends, and professors for supporting her
throughout her time at EMU.
Kelsie Autterson, from Novi, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Elementary and Early Childhood
Education. After graduation, she plans to become an elementary school teacher in the Metro Detroit area and then pursue her
master’s degree. What Kelsie appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the small class sizes and excellent faculty.
She has been involved with the sorority Alpha Xi Delta and EMU’s Association for the Education of Young Children where she
held numerous leadership positions. She had the opportunity to study abroad in Florence and Rome in 2014, and in London and
Dublin in 2015. She was also a recipient of the Gene Helms Study Abroad Scholarship and two Honors College Study Abroad
Awards. She would like to thank her parents, Sheri and Chris, her sister Gillian, and her boyfriend Josh for their endless support.
Amber L. Barsegian, from Canton, Michigan, graduates with Highest Honors and Departmental Honors in Communication,
earning a major in Communication. After graduation, she plans to attend the Michigan State University College of Law. What
Amber appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the chance to pursue something greater than the average degree.
She is an active member of the Honors Society, Phi Kappa Phi, has studied abroad in Italy, and was the recipient of many meritbased scholarships that allowed her to pursue her goals. She would like to thank her fiancé, Robert Braun, her children, and her
family for their support and encouragement, and for helping make her dreams possible.
Rachel Bentley, from Cincinnati, Ohio, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Secondary Education Mathematics.
After graduation, she plans to find a job teaching high school math. What Rachel appreciated most about being in The Honors
College were the small class sizes and individual attention. She studied abroad in Alicante, Spain for a semester and was an active

member and Executive Vice President of Sigma Kappa sorority. She would like to thank her parents and family for their support
and encouragement in everything she has done during the past four years.
Chloe Bilderback, from Kankakee, Illinois, graduates with Departmental Honors, earning a major in General Biochemistry.
After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school to become a Physician Assistant. What she appreciated most about being
in The Honors College were the opportunities for undergraduate research. She has participated in EMU's chapter of the National
Society for Leadership and Success and was a recipient of the National Scholars Program. She would like to thank Dr. Evans
and Dr. Milletti for their guidance, and her parents and fiancé for their never-ending support.
Sarah Bishop, from Garden City, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Accounting. After graduation,
she plans to work with her cousin and save up to move. What Sarah appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the
push it gave her to get more involved. She was on the Dean's List multiple times throughout her time at EMU. She would like to
thank her mother and father for trying to help her out with college, and her grandparents who made her last semester possible by
giving her the loan she needed.
Vanessa Bishop, from Lincoln Park, Michigan, graduates with Highest Honors, University Honors and Departmental Honors in
Political Science, earning a major in Political Science. After graduation, she plans to do a year of language studies and then pursue
further graduate level studies in international affairs with the intent to pursue a career in the foreign services. What Vanessa
appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the opportunities it provided in terms of resources for studying abroad.
She worked on campus for her first three years in the Office of Admissions, studied abroad in Dublin and London, has been an
active participant in Model United Nations, is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, and volunteered on two campaigns for the Fund for
Public Interest combating the overuse of antibiotics as well as water contamination. She was also a recipient of the Education
First Opportunity Scholarship, the Honors Study Abroad Scholarship, the Robert O' McWilliams Political Science Scholarship
(2015-16), the TruEMU scholarship, the Masons Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement (2012-13), and the AMUN
Outstanding Delegation Award for Exceptional Representation of Oman in the First Committee. She would like to thank her
mother for supporting her throughout her studies as well as Dr. Stahler-Sholk, Dr. Soltani, Dr. Krause, and Dr. Gary Bell for being
not only being outstanding professors and individuals, but also for being truly amazing mentors and advisors throughout her time
at Eastern.
Kristina Borneman, from Commerce, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Psychology, and
Highest Honors, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. After graduation, she plans to continue her education in graduate
school. What Kristina appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the opportunities for academic challenges and
individual projects. She has had the opportunity to study abroad and was a recipient of the Honors Senior Thesis Award,
Undergraduate Research Stimulus Program, Honors Undergraduate Research Fellowship, Robert Anderson Award, and Honors
Study Abroad Scholarship. She would like to thank Dr. Huth-Bocks, her thesis mentor, for her guidance and support. She would
like to thank her friends, for always making her laugh when she needs to and for their constant love and support throughout these
last four years. Finally, she would like to thank her family for teaching her the confidence to do whatever she puts her mind to
and for their continued love and support.
Khalil Boussi, from Dearborn, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Psychology, earning majors in Biology and
Psychology. After graduation, he will be attending the Loyola-Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. What Khalil appreciated most
about being in The Honors College was the advising he received which ensured he was on track with his Honors requirements
and aware of the many opportunities available to him. During his time, he was involved on the Men's Varsity Track and Field
team, club soccer team, Emergency Medicine Research Associate Program (EMRAP) at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital-Ann Arbor;
he worked as a supplemental instructor and medical scribe, and volunteered on and off campus. He was the recipient of several
research scholarships and was recently showcased in the Honors College newsletter. He would like to thank his advisor, Katie,
for the time she spent meeting with him, giving him advice, and acting as his biggest supporter throughout his undergraduate
years.
Kayla Boyd, from Taylor, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Highest Honors, earning a double major in Journalism
and Apparel, Textiles and Merchandising. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism. What Kayla

appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the assistance and support she received in trying new things and getting
involved at EMU. She is a McNair Scholar, has served as a staff writer and the Arts and Entertainment Editor for The Eastern
Echo, participated in the Honors Mentoring Program, and VISION Pen Pal Program. She has studied abroad in Italy, London,
and Paris, and was a recipient of The Honors College Study Abroad Scholarship, Irene Little Wallace Scholarship, TRUEMU
Scholarship, and Emerald Scholarship. She would like to thank God and her savior Jesus Christ, her mentors, parents, sisters, and
the rest of her friends and family for always supporting her dreams.
Travis Briggs, from Ypsilanti, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in Secondary Education
Mathematics, earning a major in Secondary Education Mathematics. After graduation, he plans to find a teaching job in Michigan
and get married. What Travis appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the excellent Honors faculty and professors
who helped make learning more individualized and interesting. He has worked in Student Government, as a Resident Advisor for
two years, attended an Alternative Spring Break trip to West Virginia, and was a recipient of a Certificate of Excellence from the
Department of Mathematics. He would like to thank Barbara Bain, Gwen Briggs, and Robert Briggs for being there during the
last few years and supporting him in every endeavor. Without the love and help they have provided, he would not be here today.
Tiffany Browne, from Garden City, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Children’s Literature,
and Highest Honors earning a major in English Literature. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Michigan-Ann
Arbor to pursue a Master’s degree in Higher Education with a concentration in Student Access and Success. What Tiffany
appreciated most about being in The Honors College was having the chance to learn more about herself as a scholar and
professional. She has been heavily involved with The Honors College, the McNair Scholars Program, the Holman Success Center,
and orientation as well as studying abroad in London and Oxford. She was a recipient of an Honors College Recruiting Student
Fellowship, the Honors Study Abroad Award, the Honors Undergraduate Research Fellowship, and the Senior Thesis Award.
Tiffany would like to thank her family, friends, Honors advisors, and mentors, especially Dr. Ramona Caponegro and Lacey
Hoffman, for their continuous advice and support over the past four years.
Jessica Brumfield, from Royal Oak, Michigan graduates with University Honors earning a major in Political Science.
Jessica Buford, from Temperance, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Elementary Education.
After graduation, she plans to begin teaching out of state. What Jessica appreciated most about being in The Honors College
were the opportunities and drive to be involved more. She has been a New Student Orientation Assistant, studied abroad in
Italy, and become a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an honors society for educators, and was a recipient of the Dean's List award
every semester. She would like to thank her mom for everything.
Gabrielle Burgess-Smith, from Belleville, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Public Relations and
minor in Political Science. After graduation, she will continue on to graduate school at EMU. What Gabrielle appreciated most
about being in The Honors College was the building of her professional skills. She has been active on campus in a variety of
capacities including being President of Pinky Promise, Vice-President of PRSSA, working in the Division of Communication,
being a Resident Advisor, and being an Honors College Communication fellow. Her EMU experiences motivated her to start her
own Public Relations business where she does image and brand managing for clients, one of whom is an Atlanta news anchor and
reality show contestant. She also does consulting for a number of individuals. As a result of her Eastern experiences, she was
blessed to discover her passion. Gabrielle was a recipient of the Melissa Faulkner Motschall memorial scholarship, PRSA Donald
P. Durocher scholarship, Edith Penn Scholarship, and the 2016 Outstanding Student of the Year in her major’s department. She
would like to thank God, her mother, grandmother, Professor Cummings-Carson, and others for their love and constant uplifting.
Katherine Campbell, from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in Biology,
earning a major in Biology. After graduation, she plans to pursue an internship with the Bird Center of Washtenaw County. What
Katherine appreciated most about being in The Honors College was early registration for classes. She has been an active member
in university organizations, serving as Secretary for the Korean Student Association (KSA), Vice President for Resident Hall
Association (RHA) her junior year, and Vice President of the National Resident Hall Honorary Eagle Chapter (NRHH) her senior
year . She also studied abroad in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands and was a recipient of The Emerald Scholarship, the Bert
Johnson Scholarship, Don Brown Undergraduate Research Fellowship, Don Brown Special Study Scholarship, Mary Goddard

Scholarship, and Stephen and Christine Liu Scholarship from the Biology Department. Katherine also made the Dean’s List every
semester. She would like to thank Dr. Cornelius, Ted Coutilish, and her mom for the incredible research opportunity and
mentorship, employment and experience with the University's Marketing Department, and all the love and support throughout her
undergraduate studies.
Dominique Canning, from Traverse City, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in English Linguistics, earning a major
in English Linguistics with a minor in Queer Studies. After graduation, she plans to continue her education at the University of
Michigan in their doctoral program in linguistics. What Dominique appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the
opportunity to further explore topics in her classes through her Honors projects. She is a member of the EMU McNair Scholars
Program, worked with the LGBT Resource Center, was the recipient of the Carolyn Conklin Black Roberson Scholarship, and
was named the Distinguished Student in Linguistics by the English Language & Literature Department. She would like to thank
her parents for all of their love and support over the years, Jennie for encouraging her, everyone in the McNair Scholars Program
for reminding her that she has the ability to do whatever she puts her mind to, and Dr. Eric Acton for being an absolutely fantastic
mentor.
Ellen Christie, from Chelsea, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
After graduation, she plans to attend Michigan State University College of Law. What Ellen appreciated most about being in The
Honors College was the broad range of opportunities it offered. She has been an active member in Sigma Kappa sorority, helped
to lead the orientation program, was among the top performers in her program and was a recipient of the Regents Gold Scholarship.
She would like to thank her family for supporting her and the wonderful educators in the Criminology department for helping her
reach her goals.
Shahana Ahmed Chumki, from Warren, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Biology, and
Highest Honors, earning a major in Biology. After graduation, she plans to attend a doctoral program in Biological Sciences
(PIBS) at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. What Shahana appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the
support, both personal and academic, giving her the chance to grow and become a confident student. She is a participant of the
McNair Scholars Program, president of the McNair Society (MOST), participated as a New Student Orientation Assistant with
Campus Life, and has had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy, Ireland, and England. She was a recipient of the Presidential
Scholarship Award, the Honors Study Abroad Award, the Don Brown/Meta Hellwig Biology Fellowship, the Bert Johnson
Biology Scholarship, and the McNair Scholar of the Year Award. She would like to thank her family, Dr. Heather Neff, and
especially, Dr. Anne Casper for believing that she was more than a product of her environment, and that she could learn to become
a scholar confident in her abilities for the future.
Danielle Clevenger, from Rochester, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Psychology, and
Highest Honors, earning a major in Psychology and minors in Philosophy and Dance. After graduation, she plans on getting her
M.A. in Philosophy. What Dani appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the wonderful people. From Becky and
John, to the professors and other students, she could not have asked for a better or more supportive college community. She has
had many wonderful opportunities at EMU, such as studying abroad in Italy, seeing Shakespeare productions in Stratford, and
working as a Certified Tour Guide, Marketing Assistant, Supplemental Instructor, and General Education Assistant. She also
volunteered with the Teaching Learning Academy, as an Undergraduate Psychology Advisor, and as an Intern with the Office of
the Ombuds. Additionally, she has been involved in over 25 productions at EMU, during which time she had the privilege to not
only perform but also direct and choreograph. She was the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship, the Honors 179
Interdisciplinary Fellowship, the Honors Study Abroad Scholarship, the Sofia Philosophy Scholarship, the Barry A. Fisher
Research Scholarship, the Undergraduate Research Fellowship, and the Senior Thesis Award. She would like to thank her family
for their love and support, Kelsey, Liam, and her other friends for keeping her sane and smiling, and also to John Koolage and
Margaret Crouch for their unerring guidance and support.
Michael Cornish, from Saginaw, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Statistics. After graduation,
he plans to take some time off, then start working for New Life Church - EMU. What Michael appreciated most about being in
The Honors College was interacting with other Honors students and early registration. He played club ultimate frisbee his
freshman year, has been actively involved with New Life Church on campus all four years of his undergraduate study, and was a

recipient of the Dean's List for many semesters. He would like to thank his parents for their love, support, encouragement, and
prayer for him throughout his life.
Thomas Cotta, from Chicago, Illinois, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Human Geography. After
graduation, he plans to apply to the graduate program in Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Alabama. What
Thomas appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the loving community and close relationships he developed.
He has been a member of the EMU Stoic Society, NSOA, EMU Quidditch, and The Honors College. He was a recipient of the
Elizabeth Warren and George York awards through the Department of History and Philosophy. He would like to thank his friends
and family for all of their love and support and guidance.
Kimberly Cousino, from Toledo, Ohio, graduates with University Honors, earning a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy.
After graduation, she plans to begin her a career in OT and to travel. What Kimberly appreciated most about being in The Honors
College was making lifelong friends. She has completed a graduate research project titled "Exploring the Female Cosplay
Experience: A Phenomenological Study of a Fantasy Role Play Occupation" and participated in the OT graduate research fair.
She would like to thank her parents, the OT program professors, and John Feldkamp, her Honors College advisor, for supporting
her throughout her entire time at EMU
Kayleigh Crummey, from Westland, Michigan, graduates with Highest Honors and University Honors, earning a major in Dance.
After graduation she plans to work as an adaptive dance instructor and creative movement teacher. What Kayleigh appreciated
most about being in The Honors College was the encouragement from faculty and Honors professors. She has participated in
service opportunities both nationally and internationally, performed in multiple dance concerts, and studied abroad in Italy, and
she was a recipient of the Heart and Soul Award from Michigan Campus Compact. She would like to thank her family for their
support in striving to build the career of her dreams, the School of Dance faculty for their personal investment in helping their
students advance, and The Honors College for continuously instilling confidence in her capabilities.
Elissa “Abby” Davis, from Jackson, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Management, earning a major in
Management with a Human Resource Concentration. After graduation, she plans to move to Grand Rapids and begin her position
as Sales Manager Trainee at JCPenney. What Elissa appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity to
learn beyond standard classroom curriculum and connect with students with similar goals. She has been a member of Phi Sigma
Pi National Honor Fraternity, Pinky Promise, NAACP, and the African Student Association during her time at EMU. She would
like to thank her family and friends for the love and support they’ve provided over the past four years. She also would like to
thank Professor Anushri Rawat, her faculty advisor, for graciously assisting her in many ways during her time in The Honors
College.
Kaitlin Daida, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Language, Literature, and
Writing and Mathematics with a minor in Economics.
Sara DeDona, from Northville, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in K-12 Music Education,
earning a major in Music Education. After graduation, she plans to pursue a position in the teaching profession and remain active
as a performer. What Sara appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity to connect with students
across campus. She has been active in the music program as a member of the Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos,
Symphony Orchestra, Women’s Choir, Marching Band, and Basketball Band; she has served as Secretary, Vice President, and
President of Kappa Kappa Psi; and she is a member of the National Association for Music Education. She was a recipient of the
Thomas Tyra Band Leadership Award, Jessie Dillman Scholarship, Conference Attendance Award, College of Arts & Sciences
Travel Grant, Music Service Award, William Stewart Soloist Competition Winner, Al Townsend Endowed Scholarship, and the
EMU Presidential Scholarship Award. She would like to thank her music professors for their mentorship and her family for their
loving support.
Natalie Douma, from Beverly Hills, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a Master’s degree in Occupational
Therapy and two minors in Psychology and Human Biology. After graduation, she plans to work hard in her field and travel with
her soon to be husband. What Natalie appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the help she got with scheduling

classes. She has been an Honors mentor, participated in Alternative Spring Break and was a recipient of Emerald Scholarship.
She would like to thank her friends and family for helping her succeed in her academic journey.
Nina Farah, from Ypsilanti, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Psychology, earning a major in Psychology. After
graduation, she plans to attend Life University's Chiropractic Program. What Nina appreciated most about being in The Honors
College was the opportunity to get pushed outside of her comfort zone and thrive for success. She has participated in Relay for
Life 2015 with the National Society of Leadership and Success and presented research she was involved in at the Cognitive
Neuroscience Society in New York. She would like to thank her family and advisors for helping her with her academic/career
decisions and motivating her to keep moving forward.
Kiera Fegan, from Brighton, Michigan, and is graduating with University Honors, earning her degree in Business Management
and a minor in Communications. After graduation Kiera is pursuing her master's degree here at EMU.
Taylor Gakle, from Saline, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After
graduation, she plans to work on a medical-surgical unit at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital - Ann Arbor and continue to travel with
International Service Learning. What Taylor appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the close relationships
she was able to form with her professors thanks to the limited class size of Honors courses. She has been a member of the Student
Nurse Association, President of the Society for Collegiate Leadership and Achievement chapter at EMU, and Vice President of
Membership for the Delta Alpha chapter of Sigma Kappa. Taylor also studied abroad in Alajuela, Costa Rica for Nursing where
she worked with local doctors to give care to under-serviced populations. She would like to thank her parents and sisters for their
love and support throughout all her years at Eastern Michigan University; she would also like to thank Becky, John, and the
advisors from The Honors College for their wisdom and guidance.
Rebekah Goltz, from Sterling, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Anthropology, and Highest
Honors, earning a major in Anthropology and Linguistics. After graduation she plans to take a year off and then attend graduate
school. What Rebekah appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the amount of support she received when working
towards Highest Honors. She has been involved with Omega Phi Alpha, a national service sorority, and she worked with Housing
and Residence Life, traveled abroad to France, and was a recipient of the Senior Thesis Award, The Honors College Study Abroad
Award, and the NCACU Scholarship. She would like to thank her friends and family for making sure she knew they would support
her no matter what she decided to do with her future.
Michelle Good, from Romulus, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors, earning a major in
Music Performance.
Ryan Goodcase, from South Lyon, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Psychology and Biology.
After graduation, he plans to pursue a position as a research associate in a neuropsychology research laboratory. What Ryan
appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the small, discussion-based classes. He has served as an Alternative
Spring Break Site Leader, President of Laugh-a-Minute-Enterprises, and as an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. LajinessO'Neill's Developmental and Brain Behavior Lab. He was also a recipient of the Marshall/McKeachie Award and the SURF
award. He would like to thank John Feldkamp and everyone at The Honors College for their continued advice and support through
his four years at EMU.
Courtney Gorrell, from Toledo, Ohio, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in Chemistry, earning a major
in Chemistry. After graduation, she plans to take a year off school to decide her future plans in the medical field, forensic chemistry

as the Vice President of the Catholics on Campus student organization and has studied abroad in Spain. She was the first place
winner of the EMU Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and the Barry Manilow Solo Music Competition as well as a
presenter at the Undergraduate Symposium and the Bravo Honors Music Recital. She would like to thank her parents, Carlos and
Jeanne, for their unending support, love, and inspiring example.
Shelby Hallenbeck, from Trenton, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning majors in Literature and Children's
Literature. After graduation, she will return to EMU to receive her Master's degree in Children's Literature and work as a graduate
assistant in the English department. What Shelby appreciated most about being in The Honors College was feeling like a part of
a close-knit community. She has presented at EMU's 2014 Undergraduate Symposium, served as an Honors student fellow for
the Honors 179 course, worked as a copy editor for The Eastern Echo, volunteered as a crisis counselor through Crisis Text Line,
and was a recipient of EMU's 2012 Presidential Scholarship. She would like to thank her parents for feeding her reading addiction
since she was a little girl and for their unwavering support.
Kayla Harris, from Dexter, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Secondary Education in
Mathematics and Physics. After graduation, she plans to teach high school math. What Kayla appreciated most about being in
The Honors College was living in Downing Hall and meeting her best friend. She was President of EMU's Club Tennis, involved
in NSOA for two years, and worked in the Math Lab for three years. She was a recipient of multiple scholarships, including the
Emerald Scholarship and the Leib Scholarship for both mathematics and physics, as well as making the dean's list every semester.
She would like to thank her parents and friends for being supportive with her career choice.
Ashley Henninger, from Grand Blanc, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning majors in Speech Language
Pathology and Psychology. After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school. What Ashley appreciated most about being in
The Honors College was the wonderful Honors professors and the opportunity to meet other driven students. She has been a
member of the Psychology Club and the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association for two years and she was a
recipient of the James G. Lowery and the Charles M. Elliott scholarship. She would like to thank Greg and Julie Henninger for
always pushing her to be the greatest she can be.
Claire Hester, from South Lyon, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a Bachelor of Social Work degree. After
graduation, she plans to attend the University of Michigan to obtain her Master of Social Work degree. What Claire appreciated
most about being in The Honors College was the lifelong connections she made with professors and other students. She was a
member of the Social Welfare Action Alliance and studied abroad in Jamaica over this last spring break, assisting local HIV/AIDS
social workers in providing healthcare services. Claire was a recipient of The Honors College Study Abroad Award and the
Emerald Scholarship. She would like to thank her friends and family for their continued support, especially Kris Hester for her
unwavering love and encouragement, and John Hester, for instilling within Claire the value of a quality education.
Sara Irving, from Bartlett, Illinois, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Communication, and Highest
Honors, earning a major in Communication. After graduation, she plans to serve in the AmeriCorps in Sacremento, California.
What Sara appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the intellectual discussions facilitated in the classroom. She
has been a member of Best Buddies, Special Olympics Unified Sports, the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance and Relay for Life and
she traveled to New Orleans on an Alternative Spring Break in 2013. She would like to thank her family for continual support
and her friends for making Ypsilanti feel like home.
Grace Johnson, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Social Work, earning a major in Social
Work. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania in pursuit of her Master's in Social Work. What Grace
appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity to pursue her passion for feminism in the criminal
justice system. She has been a performer in and assistant director of The Vagina Monologues, a performer in Our Voices, and

Kelly Kaiser, from Canton, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning majors in Violin Performance and Psychology.
After graduation, she plans to continue building her private music studio and continue her studies at the graduate level. What
Kelly appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the personal, involved experience of Honors classes. She has
served as treasurer of the ASTA student chapter at EMU, worked as a tutor at Eastern's Math Lab, and was a recipient of a number
of music awards. She would like to thank her family for everything...seriously, thank you for everything.
Frederick Karn IV, from Southgate, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Electronic Media & Film
Studies. After graduation, he plans to work at Cinetopia and go to graduate school. What Frederick appreciated most about
being in The Honors College were the friends and connections that were made. He has been an NSOA, a student ambassador for
the Admissions Office, tour guide and tours coordinator, videographer for the Theatre Department, and performed in One Man
Two Guvnors. He was a part of Laugh a Minute Enterprises and the Eastern Michigan Theatre. He also worked at the Cannes
Film Festival and was a recipient of the Fraternal Order of Eagles scholarship, CMTA Excellence Award, and the
McCracken/Warren Symposium Award. He would like to thank his mom, dad, Tristan, Tyler, Cindy, Gary, Jim, and Nathan for

Alyssa Keefer, from Saline, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Occupational Therapy. After
graduation she plans to begin her career as an Occupational Therapist working with the geriatric population. What Alyssa
appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the close knit community of students and the relationships she was able
to form with her fellow Honors students in the Occupational Therapy program. She has participated in the National Society of
Collegiate Scholars and the Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA), as well as served on the executive board for
SOTA. Additionally, she is a member of Pi Theta Epsilon, the honors society for occupational therapy students. She would like
to thank her mom, dad, sister, brothers, boyfriend, and grandmothers for their love and continued support throughout her
education, especially during her 's work in the occupational therapy program.
Matt Kempfer, from Canton, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Exercise Science. After graduation,
he plans to attend graduate school to become a physician's assistant. What Matt appreciated most about being in The Honors
College was early registration. He has partaken in the EMU poker club and was a recipient of numerous honor awards. He would

Nathan Kilian, from Dexter, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in Biology. After graduation,
he plans to take the MCAT and apply to various medical schools around the country. What Nate appreciated most about being in
The Honors College was advising, early registration, and friends made in the Honors community. He has been Treasurer of HSA,
participated in an accapella group, been an intramural champion in both volleyball and dodgeball, participated in oozeball all four
years, studied abroad in Italy, sang in the university choir, was part of an emergency medical research associates program, and
did research for 3 years. He was also the recipient of the Bert Johnson award, Meta Hellwig award, Senior Thesis Award, URSP,
and given the Honors Fellowship award. He would like to thanks his family, friends, and advisors for their support and guidance
through his undergraduate career.

Taylor Lash, from Canal Fulton, Ohio, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Occupational Therapy. After
graduation, she plans to move back to Ohio and begin her career as an occupational therapist. What Taylor appreciated most about
being in The Honors College was the sense of community and the opportunities presented through The Honors College. She has
been involved in undergraduate research, a member of the Student Occupational Therapy Association, co-captain for a Relay for
Life team, studied abroad in Florence and Rome, Italy, worked at The Holman Success Center, and participated in a variety of on
and off campus events and volunteer programs. She was also a recipient of the Gold Medallion Award for Outstanding
Mentorship, a research fellowship, and study abroad award. She would like to thank her family, friends, colleagues, and mentors
for supporting her journey through college and the most changing years of her life. She credits them for her success.
Allison Lemke, from Elmore, Ohio, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Criminology & Criminal Justice. After
graduation, she plans to travel for a short time and then enter the workforce. What Allison appreciated most about being in The
Honors College was the opportunity to be a part of the close-knit community in the Honors residence halls and the friends she
was able to make there. She was a recipient of the Marilyn of Monroe scholarship in Criminology her sophomore year. She would
like to thank her family for always supporting her and helping her learn the skills that have helped her in her achievements

Annie Lindsley, from Saline, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
After graduation she plans on relocating to Iowa City, IA and pursuing her Dietetics career there while her significant other attends
University of Iowa Law School. What Annie appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the small class sizes, the
challenging course material and close friendships she made through being a member. She is a member of the Student Dietetics
Association, a group fitness instructor at the EMU Rec/IM, an alumna of the sorority Sigma Delta Tau, and former EMU tour
guide. She was a recipient of the EMU Emerald Scholarship, the Cleo Jackson Kaltz Scholarship, and has been on the Dean's List
for the duration of her college career. She would like to thank her mom and dad for pushing her to work hard and persevere even
when the going got tough, her brothers Brian and Brad, her sister-in- law Beth, and her sister- in- law- to- be Janae for being
amazing role models throughout her life, to her 'girls' Annika, Melissa, Kristie and Claire for being the best friends a girl could
ever ask for and for helping her keep her head on straight through it all, and for her boyfriend Manny who continues to believe in
her and pushes her to follow her dreams.

and Merchandising, and Highest Honors, earning a major in Apparel, Textiles, and Merchandising. After graduation, she plans
to travel and eventually adopt a puppy. What Nikki appreciated most about being in The Honors College was guidance from her
Honors Adviser, Katie. Nikki studied Traditional Indian Textiles in Kolkata, India, presented at the Undergraduate Symposium,
and was a recipient of the Presidential Scholarship, the Undergraduate Research Fellowship, the Honors Study Abroad
Scholarship, and the Apparel, Textiles, and Merchandising Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. She would like to thank
her mom, dad, and her best friends.
Kourtney Rose Lovett, from Farmington Hills, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Political
Science, and Highest Honors, earning a major in Political Science and Written Communication. After graduation, she plans to
attend law school. What Kourtney appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the close-knit community and
intimate class sizes. She has been involved with campus organizations such as You Beautiful Black Woman (YBBW) and the
National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Additionally, she studied abroad in Spain during the summer of 2014. She was a recipient

Caroline Manley, from Belleville, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Entrepreneurship. After
graduation, Caroline plans to travel and keep working hard at her current job. What Caroline appreciated most about being in The
Honors College was the close knit community and friendships she made. She has studied abroad in Ireland and was a recipient of
the Skandalaris Business Plan Competition. She would like to thank God, her mother and father, Annamarie, her fans and all the
dogs that have helped her out along the way and for helping her achieve many of her dreams that she never knew she could have.
Jennifer Marcum, from Ypsilanti, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work.
After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school at Eastern Michigan University. What Jennifer appreciated most about being
in The Honors College was the guidance she received throughout her time as a student. She has been on the board of Unmasked,
a student organization, completed study abroad in Bluefields, Jamaica with the social work department, and was a recipient of a
Study Abroad Scholarship through The Honors College. Jennifer would like to thank Dr. Sipe and John Feldkamp for the neverending support they provided and her family for ensuring her sanity as she pursued and completed her degree.
Anjali Martin from Canton, Michigan, graduates with Highest Honors, Departmental Honors in International Affairs and
International Business, and University Honors, earning a major in International Affairs. After graduation, she plans to earn a
Master of Science in Gender, Development, and Globalization from the London School of Economics. What Anjali appreciated
most about being in The Honors College were the opportunities she received through her membership and the professors she met
through Honors courses. She has been Student Body Vice President, President and Founder of Emerald Flutes, Secretary of Pi
Sigma Alpha, and Secretary of Model United Nations. She has studied abroad in India, England, Germany, Italy, and Malawi
while at EMU and completed a domestic study in Washington DC. She completed two senior theses, one in International Business
examining potential business motivations for CIA interference in the Brazilian national government, and one in International
Affairs examining personal security concerns and their potential solutions pertaining to education access for girls in developing
countries. She has earned a number of awards while at Eastern including the Emerald Scholarship, Senior Thesis Award,
Undergraduate Fellowship Award, Undergraduate Research Stimulus Programme Fellowship, Gregory W. Stevens Scholarship,
Ullrich Scholarship, Heydlauff Student Excellence Scholarship, various study abroad scholarships, and departmental honors from
both the World Languages Department and the Political Science Department. She would like to thank her family for their
willingness to constantly drive her to the airport and put up with her craziness, Drs. Victor, Stahler-Sholk, and Bernstein for their
commitment to her academic study and future career, Becky and John for always supporting her crazy ideas, and all the staff and
professors she has worked with over the past four years on her incredible journey to graduation from EMU.
Elise Masland, from Rockwood, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Early Childhood Education as
well as Elementary Education. After graduation, she plans to seek a position teaching elementary school children. What Elise
appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the family she experienced while living in the Honors residence hall
and the wonderful lifelong friendships she created. She has been a member of RHA, Community Council, served as a Resident
Advisor in Downing Hall and University Apartments, and was a recipient of the RA of the Year award and the Bess E. Browne
Scholarship. She would like to thank her parents, sister, aunt, grandmothers, and second set of parents for their support and
encouragement every step of the way.
Victoria McCormick, from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Criminal
Justice/Military science. After graduation, she plans to work with Northville Police Department and attend law school at the
University of Michigan. What Victoria McCormick appreciated most about being in The Honors College were all of the helpful
professors and staff. She has participated in ROTC and was a recipient of multiple scholarships and ROTC awards, as well as
Dean’s List and other Honors awards. She would like to thank her mom and recently passed away father for helping her with
everything to get to this point.

graduation, she plans to complete a national music therapy internship. What Shayla appreciated most about being in The Honors
College was the community support and research opportunities. She has been involved in multiple student organizations including
Music Therapy Student Association, Mu Phi Epsilon, EMU Choirs, and Jazz Combos. She participated in orientation as a New

Kaitlyn McFarlane, from La Salle, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in Psychology,
earning a major in Psychology. After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school at EMU. What Kaitlyn appreciated most
about being in The Honors College were the class sizes and classes offered. She was a recipient of the Marshall/McKeachie
Award in 2014 and 2015. She would like to thank her parents and fiancé for all their support and her faculty mentor for providing

Travis D. Michalak, from Plymouth, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Criminology/Criminal
Justice. After graduation, he plans to attend graduate school at EMU and pursue his Master of Arts in Schools, Society and
Violence. What Travis appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity to have close relationships with
Honors professors and Honors advisors. He was a New Student Orientation Assistant (NSOA) for two years, a member of the
Quidditch Team and was a recipient of The Marilyn of Monroe Scholarship. He would like to thank his brother, parents, family,
and friends for all of their love and support during his entire academic career which would have been possible without them.
Andrew Miller, from Plymouth, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in Physics, earning a
major in Engineering Physics. After graduation, he plans to secure a position in the field of optics, and eventually plans to pursue
a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering. What Andrew appreciated most about being in The Honors College were individual
advising appointments and the opportunity to study abroad with Dr. Delph. He has been the treasurer of the Society of Physics
Students, is a member of the Eastern Michigan University chapters of The Society of Leadership and Success, The National
Society of Colligate Scholars, and Sigma Pi Sigma, the Honors Physics Fraternity. He attended a study abroad trip to Florence
and Rome, and was a recipient of the EMU Emerald Scholarship as well as a two time recipient of the William's Endowed
Scholarship through the Physics Department. He would like to thank his family, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and
Isabelle McCormack for providing the encouragement necessary for success when things seemed impossible.
Megan Elizabeth Miller, from Toledo, Ohio, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Marketing and a minor in
Communications. After graduation, she plans to pursue personal and leadership development. What Megan appreciated most

major in Hotel and Restaurant Management. After graduation she plans to continue her employment as Front Desk Supervisor at
the Holiday Inn in Ann Arbor, Michigan. What Tiffany appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity
to be involved in community events that allowed her to network with other Honors students. She toured the streets of Florence
and Rome, Italy in 2015. Tiffany is also a part of the Hospitality Fraternity, Eta Sigma Delta, and was a recipient of The Road to
Completion Scholarship from the Mandell and Madeleine Bearman Foundation. She would like to thank her family and friends,

award. He would like to thank The Honors College staff for all their support while he was finishing his Honors Thesis project and
his father for teaching him the importance of creativity and hard work.
Jessica Neitzke, from Brighton, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Marketing and Economics. After
graduation, she plans to pursue a career in the business world. What Jessica appreciated most about being in The Honors College
was the small class sizes. She has been a mentor for The Honors College as well as a member of the EMU chapter of the American
Marketing Association, and she was a recipient of the Outstanding Student in Marketing award. She would like to thank her

Ryan Parker graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Marketing. After graduation, he plans to work at Detroit
Business Consulting for a few years and hopefully become a missionary later in his life. What Ryan appreciated most about being
in The Honors College were interacting with fellow Honors students and staff, Honors classes, and his introduction to International
Business. Ryan has been a member of the International Business Student Association, New Life Students, EMU Running Club,
Honors Student Association, and he served for two years as an NSOA. He would like to thank his family for the endless support
and encouragement and for always being there and suggesting he visit Eastern; his New Life Friends for the encouragement,
support, and being the most loving and welcoming group he has met so far, and for the memories he will cherish; John Feldkamp
for being a great advisor and friend who supported and guided him through rough times; and finally God for bringing him here

Honors College was the constant support from her advisors. She has been a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, where she has taken
on multiple leadership roles and was a recipient of The Honors College Study Abroad Scholarship. She would like to thank her
mom and d ad, Leslie, Aunt Weez and Kristin for coming all the way from Florida to share this experience with her (and paying
for tuition and food).
Sohail Rana, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Chemistry, earning a major in professional
Biochemistry. After graduation, he plans to attend dental school. What Sohail appreciated most about being in The Honors College
was working alongside Dr. Janser on his Senior Thesis project. He was a recipient of the Emerald Scholarship, Sandra J.
Lobbestael Chemistry Endowed Scholarship, Collins' Endowed Scholarship, and two Honors Undergraduate Fellowships. He

Jamie Reder, from Bay City, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Biochemistry. After graduation,
she plans to work with Americorp for a year and continue on to medical school. What Jamie appreciated most about being in
The Honors College was the Honors advisors. She has been involved in organic chemistry research, Women's Ultimate Frisbee,
and EMRAP. She was a recipient of Academic Certificate of Achievement in Science and made the Dean’s List all four years.
She would like to thank her friends and family for their continued support throughout her college career.
Emily Reifert, from Plainwell, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Secondary Education
Mathematics and a minor in Psychology – Teaching.
Jacob Reiss, from Bay City, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Biology with minors in Chemistry
and Psychology. After graduation, he plans to work for a year at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as a Clinical Researcher focused on
stroke and neurovestibular disorders. What Jacob appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the small, discussionbased Honors courses. He has done three years of undergraduate research in biochemistry and neuroscience, went to Guatemala
on a study abroad trip focused on poverty, human rights and health, was a member of the Emergency Medicine Research
Associates Program, and was a recipient of the SURF fellowship, The Honors Undergraduate Fellowship, The Meta Hellwig
Research Apprenticeships award and The Grace E. Wertenberger Endowed Scholarship award. He would like to thank the entire
faculty for providing an environment ripe for learning and his parents for their support both financial and otherwise.
Nicole Repetto, from Rochester Hills, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Sports Management,
and Highest Honors, earning a major in Sport Management. After graduation, she plans to continue her education at Penn State
Law. What Nicole appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity to get to know so many other great
Honors students and faculty through the small class sizes and all of the support the Honors community has given her. She has
been a member of the EMU Marching Band for four years, a member of the EMU Basketball Band for two years, the Epsilon
Lambda chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon for three years, studied abroad in Ecuador in the “Becoming Global Citizens,” and served as
a Manager of Football Operations for EMU Football for the 2015 season. She worked in the Office of Athletic Compliance as an
intern for the winter 2016 semester, presented research at the Undergraduate Symposium in both 2015 and 2016, and presented
her senior thesis at the Mid-East Honors Association’s annual Conference at Indiana University East in 2016. Nicole was a
member of the Dean’s List every semester from Fall 2012 to the present semester, named Outstanding Student of the Year in the
Sport Management program for the 2015-16 year, Section Leader of the EMU Drumline for the 2015 season, and named Vice
President of the Epsilon Lambda chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon for the 2015 year. She would like to thank her parents, family, and
friends for all the love and support.
Soquel Rey, from Pinckney, Michigan graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Exercise Science, and
Highest Honors, earning a major in Exercise Science and two minors in Biology and Chemistry. After graduation, she plans to
attend Medical School. What Soquel appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the incredible staff and advising.
She has participated in college athletics, hospital volunteering, and student mentoring. She was a recipient of the Presidential
Scholar Competition and finished in the 93rd percentile for the MCAT, a national standardized test taken by all medical school
applicants. She would like to thank everyone in the Honors College, especially John Feldkamp and Becky Sipe for personally
advising her all five years; she believes their support encouraged her to enhance her resume, explore new opportunities, and
pursue her dreams.
Maya Rich, from Ypsilanti, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, Departmental Honors in Political Science, and Highest
Honors, earning a major in Political Science and Women's and Gender Studies. After graduation, she plans to attend law school
at the University of Virginia. What Maya appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the opportunities it presented
her. She has served as the Director of Social Justice for Student Government, President of the Moot Court team, Treasurer of Pi
Sigma Alpha, and is also a member of the Mock Trial team and Triota. She was a recipient of an Honors Fellowship, SURF
Research award, and Regent's Gold Scholarship. She was also on the Dean's List for all four years of her undergraduate schooling.
She would like to thank her parents for everything they've done for her and Dr. Pyle for his support.
Joshua Richardson, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Music Therapy. After
graduation, he plans to begin employment as a Music Therapist with Meaningful Day Services in Indianapolis, working with

children with developmental disabilities. What Joshua appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the
community of scholars and the wealth of information that was provided; it helped enhance and cultivate his education in a
substantial way. He has participated as the President of Sigma Nu fraternity, as a Vice President on the Interfraternity Council,
as a member of the Music Therapy Student's Association, and as an Event Coordinator for the LGBT Resource Center, and was
a recipient of the Michael G. McGuire Music Therapy Scholarship, as well as Campus Life's Interfraternity Distinguished
Service Award (2011), Greek Man of the Year (2014), and President of the Year (2015). He would like to thank the Music
Therapy faculty, as well as his family and support networks, for helping him sustain and make it through his program.
Annika Riddell, from Commerce Township, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Psychology and
Mathematics with a Concentration in Statistics. After graduation, she plans to employment and to continue advancing her career.
What Annika appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the enthusiasm and willingness everyone associated with
The Honors College had to help her. She would like to thank her family and friends for encouraging and supporting her; there is
no way she could have done it without all of you.
Andrew Rinke, from Dearborn Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Biology. After graduation,
Andrew plans to attain a master’s and then attend dental school. What Andrew appreciated most about being in The Honors
College was the excellent advising and the close knit atmosphere it provides. Andrew has been part of the club baseball team,
Eagle Optimist International, the Pre-Dental Club and completed neuroscience research and was a recipient of the Barry A. Fish
Undergraduate Symposium Scholarship, The Meta Hellwig Undergraduate Assistantship award, 2015 Honors Undergraduate
Fellowship award, the Grace Wertenberger Scholarship and the Emerald Scholarship. Andrew would like to thank Dr. Thomas
Mast and Dr. Glenn Walker for their support and guidance as faculty research advisers.
Alexa Marie Salsbury, from Delta, Ohio, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in Chemistry, earning a
major in Biochemistry and minor in Psychology. After graduation she is planning on attending medical school. What Alexa
appreciated most about being in The Honors College was being held to a higher standard by The Honors College staff and, as a
result, holding a higher standard for herself. It is easier to work hard and achieve goals when you have a support system like The
Honors College continually investing in you. She has been a member of EMU’s volleyball team, Chemistry Club, Residence life,
SASS tutoring, and research projects with the Chemistry/Biology department. She completed her thesis titled “Insertion Sites of
Feline Leukemia Virus” and received Outstanding Poster Presentation Honors at the Association of Analytical Chemist Regional
Symposium. Additionally, she participated in the Rome/Florence Study Abroad program, received the Undergraduate Research
Stimulus Program award, The Honors College Undergraduate Research award, and The Honors College Senior Thesis award.
She would like to thank her family for their support throughout the years, her research advisor Dr. Heather Holmes for fostering
a positive learning environment beyond the classroom, Becky and John in The Honors College for investing in her, and all of the
friends she has had the opportunity to meet and learn from throughout her four years at Eastern Michigan University.
Marissa Salvia, from Waldwick, New Jersey, graduates with Departmental Honors in Anthropology, earning a major in
Anthropology. After graduation, she plans to take a year off before going to graduate school. She plans to find internships
pertaining to Anthropology, specifically Biological Anthropology. What Marissa appreciated most about being in The Honors
College were the opportunities it opened up for her. Also, everyone was very helpful and supportive. She has traveled to France,
studying Methods in Bioarchaeology. She did some volunteer archaeology work, and presented at the BARFAA Conference
(2014), Undergraduate Symposium (2015 and 2016), and Transformations Graduate Conference at Wayne State (2016). She was
also a recipient of the Senior Thesis Award when going to France and the Emerald Scholarship, and received an Academic
Achievement Award from the Anthropology Department. She would like to thank her friends and family for their love and
constant support, Dr. Megan Moore for her tremendous help and guidance in Anthropological research as well as an amazing
friendship, Becky Sipe for her help and understanding along with everyone at The Honors College for offering so much help and
opportunities. She would also like to thank all of her professors for helping her grow as a student and Dr. Kristine Ajrouch for
being an amazing Department Head and so supportive of her research.
Joy Schollmeier, from Bryan, Ohio, graduates with University Honors, earning a combined undergraduate and graduate degree
in Occupational Therapy. After graduation, she plans to complete a four week OT mission’s trip in Romania before starting her
career in travel therapy. What Joy appreciated most about being in The Honors College were the opportunities to grow personally,

professionally, and learn more about others. She was an NSOA member, Relay for Life volunteer, Honors events volunteer,
Honors' student mentor, EagleFit member, SOTA member, and certified tour guide for EMU for two years. She was a recipient
of an Undergraduate Fellowship award for two years and the Dean's List for four years.
Samuel Schotten, from Livonia, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Departmental Honors in Biology, earning a
major in Biology. After graduation, he plans to prepare for and apply to medical school. What Sam appreciated most about being
in The Honors College was the engagement in research in a field that he hopes to apply his my career in medicine, as well as
engagement in the Honors community of supportive faculty and students. He has been a residence hall office assistant, resident
advisor, supplemental instructor, and Rec/IM personal trainer. He would like to thank his parents, Chuck and Susan Schotten,
for their love and support throughout his career at EMU, Dr. Daniel Clemans for his support and guidance of his research in
microbial ecology, and New Life church leaders John Allen and Dustin Santini, for providing him support in his Christian faith.
Adele Schultz, from Bunbury, Australia, graduates with Departmental Honors in Sports Management, earning a major in Sport
Management. After gradation she plans to pursue a master's degree at the University of Western Australia. What Adele appreciated
most about being in The Honors College was having the opportunity to work in an encouraging environment and meet lifelong
friends. She was a member of the Women's Swim team her Freshman and Sophomore year, the National Society of Collegiate
Scholars, Eastern Michigan University's International Student's Global Ambassador, Vice President (event planning) for the
International Students Association, and a volunteer for United Orientation. Adele was a recipient of the School of Health
Promotion and Human Performance Sport Management Student of the Year for 2014-2015, was on the Dean's list from 20132016 and placed on the Mid-American Conference Honor Roll from 2013-2014. She would like to thank her beautiful parents
who came all the way from Australia to be with her for commencement and who supported and encouraged her, along with Nate
who has been by her side here, in Michigan, over the past four years.
Avery Shelton, from Redford, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Elementary Education Early Childhood
Education, earning a major in Early Childhood Education. After graduation, she plans to become a preschool teacher and work
towards her goal of making high quality early childhood education available for all children. What Avery appreciated most about
being in The Honors College was meeting other highly motivated students. She was a recipient of the Give a Year Scholarship,
Scholar of Excellence Award, Recognition of Excellence Scholarship, and received Summa Cum Laude Honors. She would like
to thank her family for the constant love and support, for always making her laugh, and for showing her how to be strong.
Alissa Sneed, from Detroit, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Psychology, earning a major in Psychology with
a minor in Human Sexuality.
Julie Soisson, from Saline, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning majors in Elementary and Early Childhood
Education. After graduation she plans to teach out of state. What Julie appreciated most about being in The Honors College was
being a resident and Resident Advisor in Downing Hall to foster the Honors community. She was a recipient of the Scholar of
Excellence award from the College of Education and would like to thank Bill and Dianna Soisson for their support these last four
years.
Samantha Stauffer, from Elkton, Maryland, graduates with Departmental Honors in Exercise Science, earning a major in
Exercise Science. After graduation, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics. What Samantha appreciated
most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity to get involved in undergraduate research. She has served as vice
president of QUEST and Aikido Club, and has volunteered as a New Student Orientation Assistant for the past two years. She
was a recipient of the 2015-2016 Exercise Science Major of the Year. She would like to thank Frank Fedel and Natalie Thomas
for their partnership in the completion of her thesis, as well as Susan Stauffer for continued support in the pursuit of her education.
Ryan Stegbauer, from Southgate, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Mathematics and Social
Studies Secondary Education. After graduation, he plans to find a position as a middle school teacher. What Ryan appreciated
most about being in The Honors College were Honors classes and faculty relationships. He has studied abroad in Italy and was a

Erica Szkody, from Dundee, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Psychology, earning a major in Psychology with
minors in Human Biology and Human Sexuality.
Paul Taske, from Cincinnati, Ohio, graduates with Departmental Honors in Political Science, earning a major in Business
Management. After graduation, he plans to attend the University of Cincinnati to obtain his Juris Doctor degree from the UC
College of Law. What Paul appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity to work closely with Dr.
Barry Pyle and Dr. Jeff Bernstein to complete his Honors coursework and senior thesis. He has been involved with EMU Housing
and Residence Life for three years as a Resident Assistant and Office Manager, has competed with the EMU Mock Trial and
Moot Court teams for the past two years, and was the recipient of the David Hortin Scholarship from the Political Science
department and the Academic Excellence Award from the Housing and Residence life department. He would like to thank Dr.
Barry Pyle and Professor Robert Dobronski for all the opportunities and assistance they have offered him both inside and outside
of the classroom! Their expertise and guidance has been invaluable to him during his time at Eastern and will continue to resonate
as he continues on to law school.
Danita Tatum, from Atlanta, Georgia, graduates with University Honors earning a major in Public Relations. After graduation
she plans to return to Georgia to work with Help a Child America. What Danita appreciates most about being in The Honors
College was getting to meet such great people. She has been involved with the Public Relations Student Society of America and
the University Writing Center and was a recipient of the Women's Association Endowed Scholarship. She would like to thank
Andrea, Kim and Austin for being great friends and keeping her motivated through the years.
Alex Wehrle, from Temperance, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Therapeutic Recreation, earning a major in
Therapeutic Recreation. After graduation, she plans to obtain a position with the population of developmental disabilities or
mental health, with the long term aspiration to start her own therapy camp for individuals with developmental disabilities. She is
has been a New Student Orientation Assistant, a member of Best Buddies, attended an Alternative Spring Break with Best Buddies
to Chicago, IL to serve the homeless, and is an Alumni Member of Sigma Delta Tau who served the positions of Vice President
of Recruitment and Sunshine Chair and was a recipient of the Travel Grant for The Honors College to attend a Therapeutic
Recreation Conference in Chicago, IL. She would like to thank all her family and friends for their support, love, and laughter;
without all of you she would not be where she is today.
Alexis (Lexi) Wells, from Columbus, Ohio, graduates with Departmental Honors in Communication, earning a double major in
Psychology and Women's and Gender Studies. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with an
emphasis on childhood trauma/abuse and disordered eating behaviors. What Lexi appreciated most about being in The Honors
College was her ability to connect more deeply and intentionally with faculty, as well as the support provided by The Honors
College throughout her research. She has participated in a study abroad trip to London and Dublin, been involved with multiple
honors societies, completed over 350 hours of community service at the UM Mott Children's Hospital in the Pulmonary
Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU) and the Comprehensive Eating Disorders Clinic, and has completed a senior thesis
on the effects of social media usage on body image and disordered eating behaviors. Lexi is also the recipient of the Undergraduate
Research Symposium Silver Scholarship, Women's and Gender Studies Lloyd-Russell Prize for the Best Paper on Gender or
Sexuality, and the LBC Essay Contest. She would like to thank her faculty mentor, Dennis Patrick, for his guidance and support,
and her family for their unwavering belief in her.
Christa White, from Cleveland, Ohio, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Political Science. After graduation
she plans to take a break and work before attending Law School. What Christa most appreciated about being in The Honors
College were the helpful advisors and being able to take Honors classes with wonderful professors. She is a part of Phi Sigma Pi,
Pi Sigma Alpha, and Sigma Alpha Lambda. She would like to thank God, her family and friends for all the love and support, her
professors, and The Honors College for being helpful advisors throughout her four years. She would like to give special thanks
to John Feldkamp who helped her every step of the way and even deciding on her major.
Kirsten Wienckowski, from Sterling Heights, Michigan, graduates with University Honors and Highest Honors, earning a major

College of Arts and Sciences. She would like to thank her family and friends for all of their love and support.
Joe Wills II, from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, graduates with Departmental Honors in Secondary Education Language, Literature and
Writing and Highest Honors, earning a major in Secondary Education. After graduation, he plans to teach high school English
and writing. What Joe appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the opportunity to express his ideas in a rigorous
academic setting. He has participated in Helpy Hour, Gear UP, and traveled to China to teach as part of his TESOL minor. He
was named to the Dean's List every semester. He has received multiple scholarships such as the National Honor's Scholarship,
the Georgiana H. Randall Award, the Dr. Nancy Gay Kliza Award, and the Madalene McClow Memorial Scholarship. He would
like to thank Dr. Robin Lucy for her mentorship through the Senior Thesis and his wife Erin Wills for her faith in him, strength,
and leadership.
Melissa Winters, from Wixom, Michigan, graduates with University Honors, earning a major in Elementary Education. After
graduation, she plans to pursue a position in an elementary school where she can ahcieve her dream of having an impact on
children's lives. What Melissa appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the family and support that The Honors
College provided. She has been involved in orientation as an NSOA for two years and is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, a national
honors society for educators. She was the recipient of the Dorcas Wolf Scholarship in Elementary Education. She would like to
thank her parents who supported her through the ups and downs of her time at EMU and who always pushed her to exceed
expectations. She would also like to thank the family that she has created at EMU that has helped make her time here so
memorable.
Jasmine Winzeler, from Tecumseh, Michigan, graduates with Departmental Honors in Chemistry, earning a major in
Professional Biochemistry. After graduation, she plans to attain her MS, followed by either research work or Ph.D. What Jasmine
appreciated most about being in The Honors College was the support from the Honors Fellows and the motivation to leave a mark
on this campus. She has been involved primarily with research and a few on campus organizations. She was also a recipient of
the Undergraduate Honors Research award, Grace Simmons Gregory award, Emerald Scholarship, and the Leader award. She
would like to thank everyone at The Honors College (specifically Caitlin, Becky, and John), Heather Holmes for being an amazing
influence in her life, Hedeel Evans for always pushing her, and her family for everything.
