









All materials should be submitted by email to: mcbride@mines.edu.
The subject line should read: “First Year App [last name].”
All materials except recommendation letters should be submitted as a single attachment (PDF/Word).
One letter of recommendation should be sent separately, using the form provided on our website (above).
Answer all questions that apply. Feel free to leave blank any that do not.
The First Year Honors Experience has a limited number of scholarships. By submitting this application, you will
be considered automatically and notified when we contact you about your application status.
Students receiving a Boettcher or Harvey scholarship will be automatically offered admission to First Year
Honors. To reserve a space, submit only the first page of this application along with an email requesting
admission by April 4.
Students will be notified of their application status by email by April 15.
Those admitted will be asked to confirm acceptance by May 1.

Colorado School of Mines (200 words max): A Mines education prepares students to engage world challenges
related to earth, energy, and the environment. It specializes in fields related to the discovery and recovery of the
earth’s resources, the conversion of resources to materials and energy, development of advanced processes and
products, fundamental knowledge and technologies that support the physical and biological sciences, and the
economic, social and environmental systems necessary for a sustainable global society. Which of these areas do
you see yourself contributing to? Is there another area that you think your Mines education will prepare you for?

Cross-cultural experiences (150 words max): What experience learning about or engaging with a culture or
tradition that differs from your own most affected you and why? This could be locally, nationally, or

Other Information
Themed Learning Community (Honors floor of dorm): Students who are accepted into the First Year Honors
Experience may join an Honors Themed Learning Community, where you will live in an area of one of the
residence halls with other Honors students and engage in extracurricular activities to build community, become
involved, have fun, and explore arts, culture, and ideas. We’d like to know your thoughts about this opportunity.

Written Expression

(2) Share a different writing sample on any other topic. If you are pasting an excerpt from a longer piece of

what the writing sample is from or why it was written.
