Are you a Deaf signing mother who is pregnant or has a young baby under 7 months old? Or do you know a woman that is? We want to know how babies learn language! What are we doing? If a Deaf mother is signing while her baby is growing up, they will have a different language experience to babies whose mothers communicate through speech – regardless of whether the baby is deaf or hearing. Our project is trying to find out how a baby’s brain processes English and BSL. What is involved? Our activities are fun and safe and include… The baby watching short videos of people speaking English or signing BSL while we measure their brain activation. The technique we will use is very safe and simply involves the baby wearing a headset while sitting on the mum’s lap. The baby watching short videos while we measure where they are looking, using eye tracking equipment Mum playing with baby Mum doing some questionnaires with the researcher Please contact us for more information Dr. Evelyne Mercure Email: e.mercure@ucl.ac.uk SMS: 07561 523 512 Skype: - Laura Goldberg l.goldberg@ucl.ac.uk Lauravgoldberg Kim Coulson k.coulson@ucl.ac.uk 07745 612 648 Kim.L.Coulson Your travel expenses will be covered, including a hotel stay in London if you live a distance away.
