Charlotte City Council Transportation Committee Meeting Summary for July 28, 2008 Agenda Topics: I. Airport Tour Committee Information: Present: Anthony Foxx, Michael Barnes, Susan Burgess, Nancy Carter Additional Attachments: I. Airport Overview.ppt Discussion Summary: (Chairman Anthony Foxx called the meeting to order) Jerry Orr: (Begins reviewing the “Airport Overview” presentation attached) We have two simple goals here at the airport - to produce the highest quality product at the lowest possible price. We are good and we are cheap. Mayor Pro Tem Susan Burgess: Is that Denver that is so high? (Referencing slide 4 in attached presentation) Orr: Yes, that is Denver. They spent $5 billion building a new airport and that coupled with Continental pulling down, Frontier going broke, and United falling back has left them in this shape. They are very high cost. (Continues reviewing presentation) Council Member Nancy Carter: What is our movement in 2008 on Nationwide Rankings? [referencing “Airport Fast Facts” slide] Orr: We are about the same. Burgess: Can we say we are the 9th busiest airport? Orr: You can say 9th busiest airfield in terms of landings and take-off of airplanes. I believe that is in the world. Chairman Anthony Foxx: When we were in Chicago, one thing that stuck out in my mind was they figured out how to pitch Chicago as a world destination and great place to be in terms of being 16 hours from any place in the world. Do we have a statistic like that? Orr: Yes, we can certainly put that together. The international service at Chicago is a fairly recent thing. Most international service use to be in New York. Carter: How is the Wilson Air Center going? Orr: It is going very well. We will stop by there on our tour. Our biggest problem with Wilson is our Fortune 500 companies continue to buy bigger airplanes. Burgess: Wilson’s too small? Orr: They are buying airplanes so big now that they won’t fit in our hangars. Burgess: Are hangars just for maintenance? Orr: No, it’s also to keep the sun off the airplanes. The sun is damaging to the avionics in the cockpit. Council Member Michael Barnes: Regarding the Concessions slide, who is consistently the strongest in retail and food/beverage? Orr: Chili’s and Tequileria for food/beverage. Barnes: Who is struggling the most? Orr: The candy store was struggling, but they are gone. Burgess: How is advertising working out? Orr: Great! We are about 20% ahead of last year’s highest sales. A lot of market satisfaction. (Continues reviewing presentation) Burgess: Are you anticipating a lot of growth here since you are building all these decks? Orr: Yes. My job is to meet the need when it occurs. If they [more citizens] don’t come then we wouldn’t build the deck. Barnes: You indicated that the new access into the airport property from the interstate would be along the continuation of Little Rock Road down to the current Rental Car area. Is there anything else coming to that area? Orr: A 25-gate international concourse will be put in. Barnes: Are you recycling any of the materials from the existing parking decks? Orr: They will be almost 100% recycled because it is mostly concrete and steel. Barnes: Is there space for a 4th runway? Orr: Yes Burgess: Do we have the capacity to land jumbo jets? Orr: Yes, but we couldn’t get them to the terminal. Barnes: Are we anticipating the use of jumbo jets? Orr: No, I think jets will continue to get smaller not bigger. Carter: What is the date of completion on the new parking decks? Orr: It will probably be about 3 years. Burgess: How do you plan to connect the international terminal? Orr: We will use an overhead connector. At some point it will be some type of automated connector. Barnes: How long will the 4th runway be? Orr: It will be 9,000 feet.
