Stoney Creek s t r e a m r e s t o r a t i o n p r o j e c t your storm water fees at work June 2009 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services will be working throughout the Upper Stoney Creek drainage basin to reduce water pollution and restore the aquatic habitat by implementing stream restoration techniques. Currently, the Upper Stoney Creek Stream Restoration Project is in Final Design Phase. It’s important to keep our water clean since streams ultimately drain to the lakes providing our drinking water. The chosen design of this stream restoration will increase and protect the natural plant area, impeding storm water pollution because of additional impervious area due to rapid land development growth. The natural plant area will filter and absorb pollutants from storm water run-off, enhance the floodplain by returning it to a more natural meandering state and stabilize the eroded stream banks. The latter technique will decrease sediment in the stream which is known to be unhealthy for aquatic life. The next steps for this project will be finalization of the construction documents, requesting construction bids, awarding the construction contract and construction. All of the storm drains in CharlotteMecklenburg flow directly to our lakes and streams. Dirty, soapy water from washing your car can pollute our surface waters. • • • • One gallon of liquid soap will pollute 200,000 gallons of water. Consider washing your car on a grassy area. Or better yet, take your car to a professional car washing center. Don’t let soap suds go down the storm drain. Remember, only rain goes down the storm drain!
