Glassy Creek s t r e a m r e s t o r a t i o n p r o j e c t your storm water fees at work August 2009 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is working with Wildlands Engineering to determine which stream restoration techniques should be used to reduce water pollution and restore the aquatic habitat for the Glassy Creek Stream Restoration Project. The intent is to stabilize eroded channel banks, increase the natural plant area and return the channel to a more natural meandering state. Decreasing the amount of sediment in the stream due to erosion promotes healthy aquatic life. Increasing the natural plant area provides pollution filtration. Restoring the natural meanders decreases water velocity. The next steps for this project will be completion of easement acquisition and compiling planning phase information. For more information about this project and schedule, please visit our website at http://stormwater.charmeck.org and click on Storm Water Projects, Storm Water Projects again, then Glassy Creek. If you have any questions about this project, please contact the Project Manager, Danée McGee at 704-336-4102 or email dmcgee@charlottenc.gov. It’s important to keep our water clean since streams ultimately drain to the lakes providing our drinking water. Hurricane Season is Upon Us! Stay safe during storms Hurricane season is upon us. In CharlotteMecklenburg, tropical storms often bring storm winds and flooding downpours. In the past 30 years, more than half of the US deaths associated with hurricanes were due to inland flooding. Charlotte-Mecklenburg flood risks are increasing because of changing weather patterns and because of increased land development. • • • • • • • Find out if you live in a flood zone.
