You may be wondering what’s planned for the former Dore Academy property on
Providence Road.
Just as lemons provide an opportunity for lemonade, continued flooding brings an opportunity to improve our surface water quality.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services bought the Dore site with help from a federal grant. The flood-prone buildings of Dore Academy were torn down and a new school was built elsewhere in Charlotte.
Briar Creek, which borders the Dore property, will continue to flood during heavy rain.
Storm Water Services will construct a rain “detour” for storm water that flows down
Providence Road. After going into existing storm drains, the storm water will be routed onto the Dore site and into a low-lying area planted with grass. In this grassy basin, nature will clean the storm water before it is released gradually into Briar Creek.
Additional trees and shrubs will be planted around the basin and the entire site will be returned to a natural state.
Construction of the water quality features will begin in
May with planting in the fall.
