Giant Toy Spectacular starts today
BIG W reveals 2012’s top toy trends on busiest online shopping day
21 June 2012: The busiest shopping day of the year online for BIG W kicks off today with the start of the Giant Toy
Spectacular. The day coincides with BIG W becoming the first Australian department store to introduce a fully
transactional shopping app.
The Giant Toy Spectacular starts online today at bigw.com.au and will be available in stores next Thursday, 28 June.
Traditionally the first days of the Toy Spectacular are the busiest days of the year both online and in store for BIG W
with thousands of parents nationwide searching out the best Christmas presents for the kids and the best prices for
themselves.
Julie Coates, Director of BIG W, said it made sense to think about Christmas in June, “Many new toys make their
debut this week while others will be on sale for up to half their normal price so it is a great time for mum and dad to
see all the new trends in toys.”
Today online, BIG W expect to sell around 6,000 Lego sets, 1,800 trampolines, 4,000 scooters, 7,000 Fisher Price
toys and 4,500 games consoles.
“Parents may have some déjà vu when they see what’s big for girls this year. Traditional dolls and dolls houses are
all the rage from familiar baby dolls to the very modern vampire teens of Monster High.
“Spiderman climbing a dolls house made of Lego bricks whilst battling a dinosaur would just about have every toy
trend covered in 2012.
“Our most popular time for layby is the Toy Spectacular as parents spread the cost of Christmas. We expect one in
ten purchases this week to be on layby.”
BIG W launched the annual Giant Toy Spectacular outside Sydney’s iconic Queen Victoria Building today with a giant
four metre high toy catalogue which shoppers can use to buy a selection of must-have toys through the updated BIG
W phone app.
There will also be a series of pop-up virtual toy stores appearing in major suburbs across the country, “The BIG W toy
walls are located in major cinema complexes, allowing kids and their parents to see what is hot in toys this year and
make shopping lists or even buy the presents through the BIG W phone app.
“BIG W’s app for iPhone is going to change the way Australians shop as it is the first released by a national
department store that actually lets you check prices, shop and even layby items on your iPhone.
“Customers can even go into competitor’s store and use the app to scan the barcodes of branded products to see if
BIG W has the best prices. If we have a better price customers can buy it there and then without setting foot into a
BIG W store,” Ms Coates said.
