What is the Blue Planet?
The Blue Planet Water Environmental Education Center is located in Huntersville, NC. This handson public education center is devoted to drinking water, wastewater and the environment. Exhibits
include interactive displays as well as videos and computer stations. You and your class will learn about
water’s journey through the environment and how our community uses and protects its water resources.
What grade is the material geared toward?
The Blue Planet Water Environmental Education Center is targeted for 5th grade and above.
What are the hours of operation?
Tours are available the first Tuesday and the third Thursday of the month on a first-come, first-served
basis. Utilities also provides speakers for community groups as staff resources allow. Tours are by
appointment only. A tour guide is assigned to each group and is there to provide answers to any
questions the children may have.
Is there an admission fee?
There is no admission fee for the Blue Planet.
Is my class too large for the center?
The Blue Planet can comfortably accommodate up to 35 children. For larger groups we have a few
options:
Partnering with Duke Energy Explorium. The Explorium is minutes away from our
center and we are working together to split larger groups up between the two facilities; or
Blue Planet combined with in-house presentations. Based upon the availability of staff,
we can provide multiple presentations. This has been done in a symposium format with
groups of children rotating between the Blue Planet and the other stations.
Can we eat lunch at the Blue Planet
Unfortunately we cannot accommodate this request. However, Blythe Landing is minutes away from our
facility and has picnic benches, public restrooms and volleyball courts. It is right on Lake Norman and is
a great place to eat. Please visit the Park and Recreation website for more information.
