CODE REFERENCE: Sections R314.4 and R315.1. Handrails ANSWER: All required handrails shall be continuous the full length of the stair. Continuous handrail is defined as: the full length of the stair, plumb from the bottom riser to plumb from the top riser. The handrail may be interrupted by a post or wall end. A continuous rail may be built in sections provided that the sections terminate as close together as possible, but not to exceed one tread depth. A handrail may change sides only at a 3' x 3' landing. Handrails on winder stairs must be on the narrow side. Approved By:______________________________ Date: 07/01/02
