10/10/12 ELECTRICAL CONSISTENCY MEETING

1. With all the new requirements for labeling panels and directories how do we look at new work in existing building? To what extent do old labels need to be

revised?

Label only the new circuits added to existing panels. Label the new panels being added and where they are fed from. Label ALL services that are in or on the building if a service is being added or entirely replaced.

2. Is it permitted to couple HDPE conduit to PVC conduit?

Yes with listed and approved fittings. There are new products on the market made for this application.

3. Please show the differences between a hallway and a foyer.

Typically the foyer is in the area associated with the front door. If there is confusion one should consult the building plans for the description of the area, also look at 210.52(I) for receptacle requirements.

4. Can I terminate the grounding electrode conductor to the can only of a meter

enclosure?

No. per 200.2(B), 250.64(D) (3) says it must be connected directly to the grounded conductor. If it is a supplemental electrode you may connect to the can if installed according to 250.53(D) (2)

5. Hey Guys,

MECKLENBURG COUNTY Land Use & Environmental Services Agency

Code Enforcement

NFPA 70, 700.12 (F) states that the emergency lighting circuit shall be the same as that serving the area under normal power.

NCFPC, 604.2.14.2 states that there shall be separate lighting circuits (high rise),

1006.3 says supplied by premises electrical supply.

NCBC, 2702.2.4 and then 1006.3 states provided normally by the premises electrical supply and in compliance with NFPA 110 and 111 (system requirements).

I just had a call from one of my inspectors where he is turning a light down for non compliance with NFPA 70 and yet the Fire inspector is calling for the light to be on a separate circuit (this is not a High Rise Job). Am I missing something?

Which way should we be going with this?

NFPA 70 is the correct installation and does not have to be on a separate circuit as long as it’s not a high rise

6. Brief project history: During the design, the mechanical engineer made numerous changes to their VAV terminal box layout and connection requirements. These changes were not provided to the electrical engineer. The project went into construction and after installing the panels, circuit breakers and branch circuit wiring, the electrical contractor realized that there was a conflict. The electrical drawings were revised per the VAV changes and this

included changing circuit breakers to match the MOCP of the VAV boxes.

Someone made the decision to not replace the circuit breakers. From what I understand, the branch circuit conductors are protected by the circuit breaker

(for example: #10 conductors on 30A circuit breaker) but the nameplate MOCP of the revised VAV box is less than the circuit breaker (for example: 20A). The

VAV boxes do have integral disconnect and fuses per the nameplate (see attached shop drawing information). However, the electrical inspector has referenced NEC 240.10 and determined that they must replace the circuit breakers to match the MOCP of the VAV boxes.

Can you take a look at this and see if you agree with the inspector’s interpretation?

Per articles 240.10; 424.19 & 424.22, the appliance is protected by the internal fuses and the branch circuit is protected by the breaker in the panel.

7. Does insulating foam affect box fill calculations?

Yes it does and excessive foam must be removed from those boxes. It also affects nail plates and top plates.

8. When is schedule 40 PVC considered subject to physical damage?

This decision typically will be made based on the conditions of installation on any given project at the inspector’s discretion. Per 300.5(D) 1 and 4 and 352.12(C)

Schedule 40 PVC must be protected from physical damage.
