SALTERS-CLEAPSS NATIONAL AWARDS FOR SCIENCE TECHNICIANS
REPORT 2014
The SALTERS-CLEAPSS National Awards for Science Technicians 2014 produced four winners who will each
receive a certificate and a cheque for £250 at the Institute Awards Ceremony which will be held at Fishmongers’ Hall
on Thursday 20 November 2014.

NOMINATIONS
The Awards are open to Science Technicians:
• in schools and colleges for students up to 18 years old
• who also have five or more years experience
The Head of Department/Section is able to nominate a technician using an online nomination form on our website.

In 2014 there were 30 nominations from schools across the UK:

JUDGING
The judging panel uses the selection criteria below to shortlist the nominees:

The range and depth of the technician’s influence on decisions in the department, developing experiments,
involvement in schemes of work, setting standards including safety, stock control, working in classrooms,
advising teachers, NQTs, PGCE students and students.
Being systematic about their own development (where possible) e.g. attending courses, becoming an expert
in ICT.
Being systematic about managing and developing the skills of other technicians in their institutions, where
applicable.
Being key people in innovations and activities linked to the science department e.g. clubs, fieldwork visits.
Interacting with other technicians e.g. from other schools, local groups, ASE
Helping the school in other ways e.g. participating in the general life of the school.
Three of the panel visit each of the Finalists at their schools. They meet with the Headteacher and
nominator(s) and then talk with the nominated technician to find out more about their daily routine and
responsibilities.
