Twelve members of the QuA research project visited the National e-Science Centre (NeSC) to exchange ideas on requirements and the current state of Quality of Service (QoS) infrastructure support for e-Science grid computing.
Principal investigator Professor Frank Eliassen gave an overview of the goals and structure of the
QuA project. Research scientist Dr. Richard Staehli presented an overview of the QuA framework and a mapping of these concepts onto the grid. These presentations are provided on the NeSC website.
The primary goal of the Quality of Service Aware Component Architecture (QuA) project is to investigate how to develop complex real-time applications on a component architecture platform and learn (through experimentation) how dynamic QoS management and adaptation can be supported in general-purpose component architectures. Grid infrastructure is a prime area for the application of the QuA technology.
Dr. Dave Berry of the National e-Science Centre (NeSC) presented an overview of grid projects at the Centre. Five members of NeSC research staff and two visiting researchers with particular interests in QoS participated in the meeting, and a lively discussion of e-Science requirements and the current state of QoS support in the grid ensued.
As a result, it was agreed that the QuA team and the NeSC group would have appropriate followup discussions by email and future meetings at NeSC. The QuA team was invited to attend grid and e-Science workshops of interest organized by NeSC and held at the e-Science Institute (eSI).
Also, a future workshop on QoS for e-Science applications, may be jointly organized by NeSC and the QuA team and held at eSI in the next year.
The QuA project is a collaborative effort among the Simula Research Laboratory, University of
Tromsø, and SINTEF (Norway’s larger private research institute). The QuA project is funded by the Research Council of Norway.
