e-Biosci: Closed Meetings e-Science Institute, 28-29th April 2003 E-BioSci and ORIEL partners also held closed technical meetings on April 28th, discussion being focused on issues relating to work still required before wider release of an E-BioSci prototype platform. Information on the status of this and other aspects of both E-BioSci and ORIEL projects can be found on the respective web-sites (http://www.e-biosci.org and http://www.oriel.org ). The technical meetings were followed on 29th April by a hands-on workshop in the application of WSDL and SOAP to the inter-linkage of resources and services, in particular, of those types likely to form part of the E-BioSci platform. Information on meetings and other activities organised as part of the two projects can also be found on the web-sites mentioned above. Two major events in the near future are: • the second annual E-BioSci / ORIEL workshop, entitled "Dealing with the data deluge" to be held 2nd - 5th September 2003 in Varenna, Italy (see http://www.ebiosci.org/sept/sept_meeting.htm). Attendance at this workshop is open to a limited number of external participants, who will be selected on the basis of their research interests. Information on registration can be found on the web-site at the URL given above. • the sponsoring of the BioCreAtIvE Text Mining Competition, in which participants are invited to apply newly developed information extraction technologies to the bio-medical literature, with the aim of testing the ability of such systems to identify information relating to a given set of recently sequenced proteins to automatically generate a Gene Ontology annotation for each of these.
