Commencement Speaker Bio Ret. Major General Gerald A. “Rudy” Rudisill Jr. Ret. Major General Gerald A. “Rudy” Rudisill Jr. served as Chief Deputy Secretary for the Law Enforcement Division of the NC Department of Public Safety from its creation in 2012 until he retired in April of last year. The Law Enforcement Division includes Emergency Management, State Capitol Police, Alcohol Law Enforcement, State Highway Patrol and Butner Public Safety. Prior to that assignment, Rudisill served as Chief Deputy Secretary of the NC Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. The N.C. Department of Crime Control & Public Safety serves as the State's chief protector and defender of the general public, coordinates emergency response, and directs relief efforts to disaster victims. Rudisill oversaw the operations of the Divisions of Alcohol Law Enforcement, Butner Public Safety, Civil Air Patrol, Emergency Management, and State Capitol Police. Before his role with NCDPS, Major Gen. Rudisill served from 2001-2003 as Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for National Guard Matters at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. In this position, he was the primary advisor to the Chairman and Joint Chiefs of Staff on National Guard affairs. A native of Badin, North Carolina, Rudisill received his BA in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army in 1966 and later served in Vietnam. After leaving active duty, he joined the NC National Guard in 1970. Rudisill served in various command and operational positions throughout his career in the NC National Guard, culminating in his promotion to Major General and appointment as Adjutant General in 1993. In this capacity, he commanded the NCNG's 11,500+ soldiers and airmen. He served as Adjutant General until his appointment to the Pentagon in 2001. During his military career, he received numerous awards and decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Legion of Merit. After his retirement from the Department of Public Safety in April, he returned to Charlotte where he is employed by the greater YMCA of Charlotte. He has been involved in numerous community and service organizations over the years such as the Boy Scouts of America, YMCA, Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, Triangle Red Cross Board of Directors, VFW, etc. Rudisill and his wife, Sue, have a son, Brian, daughter-in-law, Tricia, and two grandchildren. 166th Recruit Class Commencement Ceremony Friday, January 17, 2014 10 A.M.
